K1200RS Questions Anyone?

Post by Xdot »

I'm currently riding a R1150R. I love the bike but it is just so darn loud. It's the wind noise. My ears are susceptible for whatever reason. I tried an R1150RT and just didn't fall in love with it. It was nice and quiet but the handling was so blasé. Recently found a 2004 K1300RS for sale not far from where I live. It looks like it's in good shape. 18K miles. ABS, heated grips, no luggage, heated seat, cruise control, and some kind of slightly taller aftermarket windscreen. (I'm assuming the system cases from my 02 R1150R will snap right on.)

Any comments or warnings on this model? How's the wind noise? Will I notice the extra 100 pounds? Just wondering...

They are asking $5,995 for the bike.

You mean a 2004 K1200RS?

For wind protection, you want the K1200GT (2003-2005): bigger fairing and windshield, most everything else identical to the K1200RS (1998 version 1; and revised version 2 in 2002). I almost bought a local 2002 K1200RS as touring bike - smooth, sporting intentions, though heavy. Like a BMW 5 Series car. 2002+ got factory cruise control, which is perfect for the mile-eating Mighty K. I really liked the bike, but wouldn't choose it for mountain roads.

The later K1200 (R, GT, and finally a half-fairing RS version) have decidedly different character. Long and awkward standing still, the motor turns your world upside down when pressed up beyond 8000 RPM. Completely different experience when compared to the 1998-2005 K1200 bikes. I almost dropped my wife off the back of a K1200GT during a test ride... she wasn't holding on tight enough when that engine moved into its sweet spot.

But our beloved Roadster board here is just not the place to ask.

And if at all possible, take a test ride.

Understood. Every time I get on my R1150R it just fits me perfectly. The torque curve. The smooth, deliberate but nimble handling. The exhaust note. Those big fat jugs sticking out from the sides. The clean, mechanical, wasp-like lines. The size and weight distribution. BMW got it right with this jewel. The best of them all IMHO. I'm going to spring $300 for a set of those custom molded racing earplugs and see if they do the trick. Cheaper than forking over 10X that, plus proceeds from my Roadster, for something I can't imagine liking as much. The R1150R just does it all so well. If not for my damn, sensitive ears ringing after every ride! And I do love my music so.
