Ohlins

Post by swamper »

Final got the Ohlin Shocks on the 2002 ABS bike yesterday. Took it out for a ride to fine tune them and feel out the bike. Worked the Damper knobs up and down a few clicks and found what the factory recommended to be the best settings. Front at 14 clicks, the rear at 16 clicks. This thing tracks now the best ever through the curvy mountain roads I took it on. This R is set up only to day ride, stripped of any farkles, no extra weight, Remus exhaust system.
Will be dialing in the other two R bikes suspension now I know how they should feel. One has new Ohlins also and the other has new TFX shocks.

Congratulations. It's the old adage about suspension being the best upgrade, and the R1150** family really responds well to the change. Shocks and good tires. Shocks and good tires and comfortable seat. Oh, and shorter Paralever strut rod.

Yep; Having all the 1150R's and the 1100S with upgraded shocks have really made for great handling. We have assorted tire types on the bikes. Have found most of them very very good but the Metzeler MR7 RR feel the best but only go about 4,500 miles. Haven't tried the Continental Sport Attack 3 yet, probable be next set for the R1150R abs bike replacing the Metzelers, just want to try the Continentals out for comparison.
The other two R1150R's have Dunlop Roadsmart 3 (2004) and Pirelli Angel GT's (2002). Both are good tire choices with the Pirelli's having better feel. Bought the Dunlops just to try for the longer trips, they offer better mileage. Wouldn't buy again as compared to all the others they don't have the feed back the others do. We have also used Avon tires on these bikes and liked them a lot but Avon no longer makes the tires, I thing if I recall Storm 2's.
Anyone here tried the Continentals??????????

How long do the Ohlins (and other race-derived shocks) last until they need re-working?
It's one of the things that always puts me off spending the money: the factories all seem to state that the shocks need rebuilding about about 10,000 miles - that's less than a year's riding for me, it's simply not worth the hassle.

Suggested rebuild by Ohlin USA is at 25,000 to 30,000 miles. I actually bought a used front this last go around and sent it off for rebuild. Found a new rear for this last R bike, 02 R abs. The rebuild went to Ohlin USA with my specs and returned within a couple weeks, most of that time was the shipping, NC. They charge a flat rate of $120.00. They add parts to the cost and your out the shipping. My total including shipping both ways and parts came to $190.00. I look at it more like tires, they wear and need replacement/rebuild. They call it maintenance.
The Ohlins seem best for me. The TFX shocks didn't really work out so good for me on the 04 R last summer so they are now on my sons 02 R. Traded him for his new Ohlins which I like much better on the 04 R. He likes the TFX better, so it's more of a matter of personal preference and riding styles.
By the way I went ahead and bought a new set of Continental Sport Attack 3 for the 02 R ABS bike, did a price match at Revzilla $260 to the front door.
