They passed it last year, it's not a continual flashing but the one
with the 3 or 5 second flash then it goes to steady on.
I've just done 1/2 hour searching all over the internet and this forum
and can't find anything that says they're illegal in MO. Closest I
could come is the official MO DMV motorcycle driver's guide that
says to tap your brakes to flash the brake lite when coming to a stop.
And the difference IS?!
Even searched the MO statutes and couldn't find anything, probly didn't use the
right terms or whatever.
Anybody have any links to something that proves it one way or the other?
I'd LOVE to mail that meathead a copy if they're not illegal! The jerk
cost me $10 for a failed inspection, about 60 miles of driving, 2 hours
of lost sleep (I work nites & had to get up early to get there), and a half
hour of unloading and reloading the bike onto the trailer - I trailered it
there cuz I was going to get my truck inspected too, but cancelled that!
Thanks!

Re: Flashing brake light failed inspection in MO
I don't know if they are legal or not. I had a similar issue. I took my bike to the place that inspected my car and truck and they were not used to doing motorcycles but said that they would. Needless to say they were going to fail me due to the after market lighting. I have the Motolights on the front for extra visiblity and I have the http://hyperlites.com/ on the back for the same reason.
They were getting a manual for inspections on motorcycles and I kept telling them that I bought the bike with those items already on there and that I should take it back to the dealer. They agreed and let me go with no reject sticker or did not charge me either!
Needless to say, BMW passed the bike no problem and told me to always take it to a dealer for inspection because they know what to look for.
Good luck!

Re: Flashing brake light failed inspection in MO
Yeah, looks like what I'll have to do.
I called the local dealer at home (I'm working 400 miles away from home and there's no
dealer in the KC area where I have the bike (believe it or not, huh?!) and he said there's
nothing in the law that prevents flashing lights at least not the ones that flash for a few
seconds and then go steady. Only thing I could find was that flashing lights that flash
continuously are reserved for emergency and work vehicles, which makes sense to a point
at least.
I've got the hyperlites on the back - and a flashing setup for the oem brake lite.
They both flash for a few seconds then go steady.
The MO DMV motorcycle operator's handbook even says to tap the brakes a few times
while stopping to flash the brake lite to better get the attention of vehicles behind you.
So, I guess I'll haul the bike the 800 mile round trip to home to get it inspected.

Are there any other motorcycle dealers closer? I know some do state inspections and some do not.

Re: Flashing brake light failed inspection in MO
There probly are, but I've done a little business with the local dealer.
Being I make bi-weekly trips home anyway I can just hook up the
trailer and take it along. If I go someplace else just for an inspection,
I could end up driving 100+ miles round trip extra, just for the inspect.
There's supposed to be a dealer in KC, but repeated calls and emails have
never been answered, so it appears they're no longer open altho their
website is still up an there's an inspection sign on their building.
Even that's nearly a 100 mile round trip from where I'm staying north of
KC, so - -.

Re: Flashing brake light failed inspection in MO
1) I miss 2 hours of sleep (not good when working 11 hours a nite)
2) I drive 60+ miles which costs $
3) I have to trailer my bike to another location at more cost
4) I have to spend additional time out of my schedule when I have
precious little to start with aside from work
All because somebody who doesn't know the rules
incorrectly fails my bike's inspection.
Is that not a problem? It is for me.

Sorry -- I assumed that you'd simply ride the bike to the other shop and spending some saddle time wouldn't be a problem.
