I have taken the rest of the week off and plan to head out on Tuesday 8/30 morning. I will be riding my Titan Gray (it's actually dark green) 04RT with Givi V46 top box and Big Mak tankbag, wearing a Venting Machine or black Savanna II jacket. I have no specific route plan, no reservations, just a bike and a credit card.
My planned route is as follows - if anyone has any suggestions of any type (lodging, restaurants, t*t bars, routes, etc) please feel free to share them - I am working from my home office today and will pick up your messages:
Day One (Tuesday) - Phoenix area to Montrose, Aspen, or Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Day Two - Rocky Mountains to Ketchum, Idaho
Day Three - Ketchum, Idaho to either Reno or Tahoe, Nevada or all the way out to Crescent City, California
Day Four - easy day down to the Paso Robles/San Luis Obispo, California, area
Day Five - easy day down to my Mom's place in Woodland Hills, California
Day Six - slack in LA (probably do a Topanga Canyon run)
Day Seven - Woodland Hills to Phoenix area

I really really dig The Hotel Bristol in Steamboat.
The Hotel Bristol
rates should be reasonable this time of year... and you can go soak in Strawberry Park Hotsprings after dinner.
Strawberry Park Hotsprings
just some thoughts.

Bob,
couple road recommendations depending where your final destination takes you on Tuesday -
Hwy 141 between Naturita and Whitewater - highspeeed sweepers, very little side road and little traffic overall, you'd think you were in UT by the landscape. (only gas in that stretch is in Gateway).
If you stay in Montrose check out hwy 92 through Gunnison Nat. Monument which hooks up nicely with hwy 65 over Grand Mesa. They are a couple of very nice scenic and riding roads. (no fees)
Hwy 187 between Paonia & Redstone, very nice mountain pass with little traffic and nice hs sweepers. Watch out for the hooved devils at dawn and dusk though.
If you heading up to Steamboat take 131 north from Walcott. If you've got time, detour east on 134 then north on Hwy 40. Both routes are excellent.
Only t!ty bar i know of on the western slope is in Grand Junction, from what i've been told.........
Good luck, have fun and keep the rubber side down.

Bob,
I have to give a big second to 187 between Redstone and Paonia (breathtaking). You can also get some awesome fruit ( a little late in the season for peaches and bing cherries) in Paonia and Hotchkiss, also 92 is stunning. On day four, if you can drive 45 minutes further south there is an awesome place to stay. It's called "El Capitan Canyon", (http://www.elcapitancanyon.com) they have safari tents with very comfortable queen beds ( heaters electricity, etc...no phones or TV) and an awesome general store/deli...they also have deluxe cabins w/ jacuzzi's if you want more upscale. Great wineries in and near Paso Robles...if you're in to that. Never been caught in a strip joint so I can help you there ( like I said...I've never been caught!).
Have a great trip and post pics when you get back.
Aloha,
Chef

Thanks for all the wishes and info - I'm off at first light. Will take the suggestions on Colorado with me and will put fresh batteries in my digital camera - will post pix in the "Great Rides" section.
Wifey is driving the cage to Paso Robles via L.A. to meet me and we are going to do a day of wine tasting and buying there. Favorites are Eberle and Castoro.
See you all down the road!
