Starter replacement Puzzle

While waiting for a replacement starter, I decided to replace the fuel filter. (Don't ask me why) Long story short. With tank still off, tried to test starter. Battery charged, hit start button. NOTHING. Before I go nuts and start tearing into wiring, removing starter etc. I just occurred to me that those same brilliant engineers who put the battery under the seat may have built in some switch that won't let the starter operate
until the fuel lines and Motronic are hooked up. I have my fingers crossed that is why it won't turn over. I really, really don't want to lie on my back trying to get that inside torx out.
Thanks

You're waiting on a new starter and yet you're trying to crank engine over (old starter?) I'm a bit confused here. Why are you replacing starter?
Or I guess I should ask what were the symptoms prior to ordering a new starter?
FWIW---I replaced my starter last summer. Found a new starter on Amazon (not rebuilt but built here in the states) for I think about $75.
BMW is in the $400+ range.

Other way around.Replaced filter waiting for starter from Amazon, $68. Installed new starter & relay. Did not install tank. Tried starter. Won't crank. Will remove starter next.

Have you checked if you have power to the starter relay when the start button is used ??
It's not uncommon for wires to break around the steering head, they were too tight from the factory .

Oliver i bought the same starter. It's been doing fine. My bike's covered while it's raining here (3 days now) otherwise I'd go look at the fuel pump wiring. Can't remember if there are two or three wires. Might be a safety there to keep the engine from cranking without fuel. Or you can carefully jump over the relay with the hot (+) and see if the starter spins. I'd doubt the new starter is bad.
