But Towerworker, I beg to differ - this graphic from the RealOEM parts list is for a year 2002 Euro-version 1150 bike.
Which has stick-coils....proving the fact that once more BMW USA AG is historically right up to current times, actually behind the times.

As usual with this rather behind-the-times forum design, you have to point at the link below and then right-click to choose "Open in new window" in order to see the foto. You can't just look at it in the body of the post. Why ? ?

The supplied link shows a conventional ignition coil, coil wire and spark plug cap. It looks like a stick in that it's about 5" long. But it is not a coil within plug cap (which is what a stick coil is). Follow the plug wire back to the frame mounted coil. Same coil my '03 had. The stick coil has DC power cable to it. With I think a 3 conductor wire. Might just be 2 just don't remember without pulling the cap. A DC voltage is supplied to the coil to fire it just like any other ignition coil. The stick coil cable is smaller than a conventional spark plug wire.

If that parts fiche is European then possibly those models are single spark as well. That same diagram (in dual spark) shows both coils, two plugs and related cabling. The below from Max BMW.

https://shop.maxbmw.com/fiche/DiagramsM ... v=07242017

Next one is a single spark fiche. Note one plug, wire and coil.

As I mentioned, Sputtering occurred when bike leaned left or right and when it got hot or rode the hot weather.

After I watched several youtube videos on this issue, I will try anything to fix it and any possible causes.

On this video, this gentleman mentioned Bad Side Stand Switch that caused his bike (R1150RT) to sputtered when he turned left or right and when bike got hot or rode in hot weather.
It started to make sense to me:
1. Side Stand Switch acts as safety features (kill engine switch, remind the ride to bring up side stand.
2. If Switch was to go bad (excessive plays inside or bad electrical contacts), it gives fault signals to cut engine off as bike shaking.
3. As why the sputtering occurred when bike got hot but sputtering will not occur when cold.
Reason: The location of this switch is located near exhaust pipe and converter; heat caused wires to expanded and short out.

Other video, rider (R1200GS) has damaged Side Stand Switch and caused bike to shut down. He has done a bypass on Switch and his bike started.

What should I do?

Well, I will attempt to bypass the safety switch and hope sputtering go away, never show up again

To repeat, for the benefit of AZBMWRider....

Non-US models from year '02 have stick coils. See my reply above to Towerworker including the weblink to the RealOEM parts fiche.

Bypassing side stand switch sounds like a good diagnostic plan. Let us know how that works!

Can you unplug harness from side stand switch and just short the two leads? (assuming the switch is normally closed with stand up)

Switch was so old; as I tried to pull, It is simply fall apart on me.
If this bypassing solved the issue of sputtering, I will leave it bypass and do not bother getting a new switch. Save me $94

I will let you know after 2000 kms trip this weekend.

Non-USA boxer bikes of year '02 onwards have 4 spark plugs, hence they have stick coils.

See the graphic grabbed from REALoem's parts fiche in my post above replying to Towerworker.

I'm not sure about the mostly-Chinese wetheads with the wet clutch and the shaft on the left.

Have you thought about the hall effect sensor? I had to replace mine (the wires where green with corrision around the connectors under the fuel tank) the bike would run great then stall and not start. Then next day after night in the garage it would start the next morning. Maybe yours acts up when it gets hot and it throws off the signal?

hall effect sensor? Very Interesting!!

Will Hall Sensor acted the same as bad Sidestand switch, bad coil when leaned left/right? It is also sputtering when rode in hot weather. After bike is cool down, coffee break, it will run good.
I bypassed Sidestand switch, just to test the theory and will keep bypassing the switch. One problem that I do not have to deal with.

When my hall sensor went it would not start again at all. I replaced both my coils a few years ago because I was getting sputtering in the rain only. The new ones fixed that.

I am getting really confused now, Electrical !!!

On Youtube, Hall Effect Sensor should be changed around 70,000 miles before it is gone bad. It is common that wirings on sensors dried/cracked and short out. My bike is at 61000 miles now; Is it a warning (sputtering) to change HFS? Fuel Clogged, plugs and wires, coil and possible Sidestand switch are not the real problem; they are the symptoms of HFS.

I rode my bike to work this morning; the weather was nice and cool.
No Sputtering when I gunned it.
30 minutes later, I came off a sharp left turn. Here comes Sputtering.

Any suggestion?

Failing or failed HES wiring won't necessarily stop the bike dead - remember there are 2 sensors wired to the HES plate - a top and and a bottom one. If the top one goes iffy, it won't stop the bike dead. Bottom one will, though. I think....
As said, it's not usually the HES gubbins that fails - it's the wiring to and from it that's constantly taxed by heat from the crankcase. Later models had more heat-resistant cabling. Very expensive.

Maybe, start bike, put on center stand in neutral and then move handle bars left and right and see if any difference.. then dismount bike and turn handle bars left and then grab wire harness around forks and wiggle and repeat on other side. I did this when I had an electrical issue and bike would not start and a wire to the ignition swich was loose and was making the connection intermittent.....

......on my HES the unit itself was fine, but the cables from the unit to the connection box under the fuel tank were cracked, exposed, and corroded... When you have fuel tank off just follow the wire loom from HES to connection box...

I rode about 150 miles today and tried to repeat the processes, turned sharp left and do not hard accelerated Bike ran ok. However, I turned hard left, hard accelerated it. It is sputtering as it is running out of fuel, briefly or stretch wirings out of place or caused a brief short out.

Riding on hot day, sputtering occurred more often as something overheated. When I stopped for a break, 10 -20 minutes and ride again. Bike ran normal.

I will check cables on HES when I have my tank off.

In Northern Japan, we stop riding bike by End of November; I might have to suffer on sputtering until EON and work on bike in winter.

I went out riding with temperature in 20C range, put another nearly 300 kms, not hard push or hard accelerated. Bike ran good all day with no issue.

Here are the listing of what I have done to bike.
fuel filter changed
plugs and spark plug wires changed
Bypassed sidestand switch for good
coil reading 0.6 ohm
HES, inspected and cleaned wirings at connectors

on the other brilliant forum, ADVRider, an expert called GS addict has a useful comment and graphic re HES wiring :-
He says, "You cannot tell by looking at the wires on the old style HES unit whether the insulation is failing. The worst spot is right behind the plate under the splice. Jet washing provokes the first sign of failure, because the bike won't run until the HES dries out. Eventually all old style units will strand you."
So gaijin, have a look at your wiring again - compare it to this foto :

thanks for the info.

I went into Adrider Forum; all things seemed to head toward HES. However, on German Forum, riders tended to point out to Bad Coil, Plugs and Sparking wires.
HES remove and reinstall seems to take more time, so, I will play with ignition coil since it will take me just 20 minutes to remove the tank.

After I changed ignition coil (single plug), I went out riding, Hard Accelerated about 50 kms. No Sputtering until I took a sharp right turn, hit a bump; it sputtered a millisecond and ran normal again. Sputtering seem to happen when I turned hard left or right. Today, it happened after I hit a bump.

I would say:
1. Issue with bad/heated coil is fixed.
2. Fuel pump might be next after I hit a bump incident and sputtering always happened after hard left/right turn. Pump will be expensive but it is easy to replace.
3. HES.
