Skid Plate

Post by swamper »

Anyone know which skid plate will bolt up to the 1150 R? Looking to start doing some more dirt/gravel type roads and would like to have better protection.

Found one from a R1150GS on E-Bay. Seller says it will work on a R 1150 R, will see.

Update: I had found one on ebay and bought it. However USPS lost it at the local facility. Got a refund from the seller and he had gotten insurance so he got paid. With none come available I went up to Ozzie's BMW and bought all the parts for the skid plate on a 2004 R1150GS. They where all still available from BMW and in the USA warehouse. Picked up a week later and all fit was perfect. Cost for all the plates and mounting hardware was a bit over 200. It's all listed on the 1150 gs parts-fiche if interested.

Did you install both inner and outer plates?

Yes with all the OEM fasteners, didn't realize it had a double plate arrangement previously.

Yes - a beefy setup, two scoops of shock/vibration isolation and protection.

Photos?

Been up the haul road all the way.... no skid plate, lots of mud..a mess... but no damage.
Skid plate for heavy rocky trails w/quick speed. Makes changing the oil a pain, not sure its worth the trouble for a road.

Good luck..

I know it will add a few minutes to the oil changes but that's OK with me. The fast gravel and jeep trails was my concern after my Continental Divide ride it brought to my attention just how hard those rocks get thrown up. I had tall boots on and my shins still took a couple pretty darn hard and big too. More of a peace of mind than a necessity after all I've ridden this bike now for over ten years and don't plan to get rid of it ever.

I'm just thinking out loud here . .with this skid plate on, would the 1150R be able to use a standard bike lift ?
