U shaped fitment on forward exhaust attachment bar

Post by Hoof »

There is a U shaped fitment about 2 inches long and about 1/8th inch in diameter on the 1150 LH side forward exhaust attachment frame bar. Its welded on and seems to have no purpose...any idea what this is for?

This is probably ??a WAG by the dealer that I purchased my Rock from ( Irv Sever BMW orange county CA) but when I asked about that loop the general feeling was it was a tie down for linking a locking wire/cable and securing stuff to the machine....maybe a stretch.
Never have used it..Ha! but I'm sure glad its there!!

I don't have pics..somebody??
Its a wire sized loop maybe 3/8" dia.. sorta triangler shaped.
Its on the left side attached to the frame tube that holds the passenger pegs.

I could be wrong about what our poster is talking about, but it is on my '04 Rock.

I asked the question elsewhere and was told that it was a wire/cable guide for bikes sold in countries other than the US. Not sure what wire/cable that might be and also don't know it that's accurate- just adding it to the existing answers.

Know what, that seems like the best answer that I have heard 'cause it being only on one side and its position/shape, its makes perfect sense it was used as a cable run eye...
Mystery solved...maybe.

Its got my vote.

Well I own an R1150R that was not build in or destined to be shipped to the USA and it has the same thing. No cables or wires in that area.

But look at what I found in the maintenance manual on page 20. Could it be used to tie down the bike for shipping? To make sure that there is no damage? On the right hand side they can use that helmet holder, but on the left side?

That is possible as well!!!

All cars coming to the States from manufacturers have U on the underside of the car for tying down/securing on ships and trucks...

But it seems to me was ment for some kind of cable/wiring run???

The reason is that wire attachment is pretty puny to secure a 500+ lb moto.???

There is nothing on that side that requires a cable or wire. Just the exhaust.

And it's only one of four straps and only meant to keep strap down in place, not lift the bike.

With all due respect...

I have crossed the Pacific ocean 4 times on an aircraft carrier and have experienced heaves near 1 G neg. and rolls that were impressive.(almost walk on the bulkhead).

Take a look at the u attachments on cars that come across the oceans. Enough to lift the car me thinks. (even one).

So still unknown as to the real purpose....

Next time I'm in a BMW shop I'll be curious to look at the new bikes to see if there's a similar welded loop on those.

easybee has the answer. It's a loop used for tying down the bike in transit overseas.
Trouble was, back in the early noughties, the sub-crontacted cheapo cost-cutting shippers manhandled the bikes on-board ship, so they dropped a bike on frequent occasions and screwed up the precise alignment between the bell housing and the gearbox attachment, leading to rapid wear of the spline / clutch friction plate interface. ¡ Problemas grandes !
By 2004 they'd changed the shipping contractor / supplier to one who had a smisdgeon of a brain and so handled the bikes more carefully dockside.
AL in s.e. Spain
This is the list of people I'd trust with my bike
