2004 1150s...What’s your fuel efficiency??

Post by shahrkster »

I am concerned a bit about my fuel efficiency. A lot
of my riding is within the city and the max I have been able to do is 36mpg. Any thoughts on this? Is it too low? What’s yours?

Ours ranges between 35 to 45. We have three R1150R's and they all get about the same MPG.

I average 42 mpg on regular, 87 octane, 49 mpg on premium fuel, 91 octane .
This is the US/North American version for octane, MON+RON / 2, commonly called the AKI, anti knock index .

I get around 34-38 in town depending on how much of a hurry I'm in, so that is normal.
And I get between 48-50 on open highway, again depending on how much of a hurry I'm in.
Lately trending to the higher mpg's !-)

My 2002 gulps the same. Around 35 average, but I ride it hard without economy in mind. I always thought the bike would be more efficient but it’s a thirsty motor.

Couldn't agree more. But it's so much fun to ride them hard.

Thanks all for your feedback...I feel better. I do tend to idle my bike probably more than average because I don’t ride it often.

If you want greater range (if not efficiency), you can modify the fuel filler neck to get about 1.5 to 2 litres more fuel into the tank.
I'm currently getting about 180 miles to reserve (ie before the light comes on) instead of 160 or so.

I've done the neck mod and can get to 200 easily before the light comes on. Then I've gone up to 235 with the light on. You can fill it very slow without the mod and still get the tank full, it just has to be a very slow pump and takes a lot of patience.

Just for the record, Karl takes his 1150R to track days, gets in the low teens MPG.

48mpg on long runs in the UK.
That's equivalent to 40mpg in the USA.
My wife has just bought a brand new Kia Picanto. The trip computer was calibrated in US gallons. With a few presses of the buttons, mpg was transformed.
