Mirror upgrade? Bar end mirror?
Looking into changing my mirrors for 1) cleaner look and 2) better visibility behind me as I commute in heavy "stop and go" traffic daily.
I've predominantly been looking @ Wunderlich http://www.wunderlichamerica.com/mm5/me ... gory_Code= and Rizoma http://www.motostrano.com/riclrebarend.html and Oberon http://www.oberon-performance.co.uk/aca ... rrors.html and CRG http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/ ... irror.aspx
Anyone have any experience/opinions with the ones I'm looking at or perhaps suggest some others?
I'm leaning toward a good quality convex lens to give me a wider view without image distortion.
If there is a good looking, good quality mirror that is not in the "bar end" catagory, I'm willing to entertain those also.
Thanks

Re: Mirror upgrade? Bar end mirror?
I'm gonna make a suggestion - since I see a lot of new people here.
SEARCH.
Topics like exhaust, lighting, mirrors - have all been discussed at length. Most of us who discussed them back a while ago, don't really want to repeat ourselves. The knowledge IS here - all you have to do is look. I rather suspect if you searched "mirrors" - you'd have an evenings full of reading to do.
Don't take it the wrong way - we welcome new people on the best bike BMW makes - you've shown how smart you are by buying one, but it does get rather old discussing same-old-same-old.. so please try search first.
And welcome to the group.. we're actually mostly friendly..

If you like the Rizoma stuff, try PJ's Parts...
I have done business with PJ. He's a great guy, with good deals... keeping in mind that the Rizoma bits are all outrageously expensive.
But I believe his prices, service & selection are the best.

After I trashed the glass in my bar-end Wunderlich mirror in a lane-splitting, ahem, mishap08_r1200r wrote:Looking into changing my mirrors for 1) cleaner look and 2) better visibility behind me as I commute in heavy "stop and go" traffic daily...I'm leaning toward a good quality convex lens to give me a wider view without image distortion.
, I used a 3" diameter stick-on convex mirror that fit the mirror body until I decided what to do next. Based on that experience I would recommend against the use of convex mirrors on a motorcycle. The image distortion was bad enough that it was almost worse than no mirror at all, particularly on the freeway, where the mirror would give me no sense of either the distance or closing speed of vehicles to my right rear. I finally went with the K1200R mirrors which, although not as sexy as bar-ends, are better overall (see the Mirrors That Work thread).Ron

Re: Mirror upgrade? Bar end mirror?
I bought these one and I am not unhappy at all...if fact it is much better than the "awful" stock mirrors...
Wide field of vision...they use to vibrate but not anymore...adjustability and no more shoulders in sight with the extenders.
I am afraid bar end mirrors are not really a solution...even if it look like it is

Long life to the Darwinist laws of the forum SEARCH feature !
This was a gentle way to put it for Don but It is funny to me
because on every forums there is always one or a few guys that never miss the opportunity to systematically remind to spontaneous posters to USE the SEARCH features.... just like it could be almost "slightly retarded" state of mind to do not use it, also just like there could be some annoyance to share the interface with posters that don't like or don't mind using a features that is boring as hell... even if sometimes useful ! but nothing more....
And for sure !
Until now, no one has proved
that peoples who use the SEARCH feature
never repeat themself too...
So ! if you don't like using it, you screwed...

Re: Mirror upgrade? Bar end mirror?
Hello 08_R1200R.
i tried both the Wunderlich mirrors and the Rizoma. The Rizoma are my favorite. They have an odd blue tint that you'll grow accustomed to in time. The best thing about them (besides how sexy they are) is the size and shape of the lens. Slightly convex, large mirrors give a good, vibration free view of what's happening behind you.
Mounting them is not exactly plug and play though. Originally I started with the Rizoma mirror mounts and the mirrors. Then I had to buy different bar ends - longer and heavier ones - to fit the Rizoma mirror mounts. Before I knew it, the mirrors were sticking way out away from the bike and the steering was affected by the bigger bar ends.
So then I bought the Wunderlich which mount very easily to the stock bar ends.
The Wunderlich are fine, but after seeing the great view afforded by the Rizoma I decided to figure out a way to mount the Rizoma and get rid of the Wunderlich.
The issue with the Rizoma is that they need a cylinder shape to mount to and our bar ends are conical. So my BMW dealer got a machinist to mill down the stock bar ends and below are the results.
I like the way it's all set up and I heartily recommend the Rizoma, but if you're interested in the Wunderlich I have a pair I can sell you.

Frede where can I get a set of those mirror relocators? The things that move the mirrors out towards the outside?
I don't mind repeat subjects at all. New guys have new questions but there IS allot of information on the site if you're shy.
Eric , That is a very nice looking setup you've got there.

Re: Mirror upgrade? Bar end mirror?
Check out this thread: Mirrors that work.
I tried the Napoleon bar end mirrors but was left unsatisfied. I believe a lack of aerodynamics ruined my experience with them. I ended up putting the stock mirrors back on. Those Oberon bar end mirrors look interesting...

I have not tried this but I suspect the mirrors from the F800GS would fit the R12R, they look pretty good compared to the mouse ears.
If they didn't use a "drill chuck" style base that allows them to rotate if you bump them hard (fall in the dirt) I would simply exchange them.

Re: Mirror upgrade? Bar end mirror?
I have the CRG bar end mirrors on my Duc. I like them. High quality billet aluminum. Convex mirrors. Replaceable parts. Low profile as in they don't rise very high above the handlebar. Optional folding out of the way for lane splitting thingy, which I did not get. Made right here in the US, if that matters to you. Style wise very appropriate IMO for the Duc or if you are going for a cafe racer look. Did I mention high quality?
Good luck,

Love those mirrors.
I just ordered MA506 Rizoma Bar Ends which claim to work well for mounting the "Class Retro" Bar End Mirrors from pjparts.com (Someone in this forum recommended them and I thank them for that because they do appear to be the least expensive based on my poking around.)
I'll let you know how that works out.

Re: Mirror upgrade? Bar end mirror?
I built these bad boys for under $20. The mirror heads are the exact same as the ones that come on the Wunderlich bar-end mirrors (my friend has a set of those on a K1200S). I got the heads for $6 each from http://www.mirrycle.com, yes that's $12 total plus a whole $3 for shipping. Add a few bucks for hardware and you are all set. I used spacers to be able to bolt to the Throttlemeister and retain functionality of the throttle lock. The brackets are aluminum angle from my scrap pile. I will admit that I did not have high hopes when I built these, but that was 6000 miles ago, and I like them better than the stockers. They are rock solid and I never see elbows or shoulders in my rear view. In case you can't tell, the bike in the pics is not a R1200R, but you get the idea:08_r1200r wrote:Looking into changing my mirrors for 1) cleaner look and 2) better visibility behind me as I commute in heavy "stop and go" traffic daily.Anyone have any experience/opinions with the ones I'm looking at or perhaps suggest some others?

Re: Mirror upgrade? Bar end mirror?
I've been using the Napolean bar end mirrors for years. First on my K75S and now on my RR. I think they look wierd but whenever I get on the bike I'm glad because field of view is excellent and no vibration even at speeds where the airflow is rather "robust"
. They don't cost much at all and it was a breeze to mount them. Enjoy.

That answers one question I had, to whit: Are bar end mirrors compatible with a Throttlemeister?

Re: Mirror upgrade? Bar end mirror?
This might sound stupid.
I have stock mirrors and will probably keep for a while due to money. I had the problem mentioned earlier in the topic of seeing my arms in the mirrors. I moved the mirrors farther out by making their angle 90 degrees to the bike.????
If the bike is facing north then my mirrors are pointing east or west respectivly. The bike came with the mirrors alligned with the bars. My view behind improved somewhat but the vibration is still there. I wear a size 44 jacket.
