How to install safely my Scorpio Alarm on the R1200R ?

Hi !

I am looking for a Remotely Controlled and Simple Perimetral Alarm that only need to be plugged on my R1200R just like a simple accessory.

Why ? ---> Because I live in Los Angeles, never drove a car of my life and use my R1200R everyday all around Los Angeles county... so ! I just need to keep Kiddo's or Weirdo's away from my soft luggage's on a Parking or anywhere that I will not be too far from.

I know that it will not radically resolve the theft risks but it intimidate.. I saw it on my previous bike...

Actually own a Scorpio Alarm from Aritronix http://www.scorpioalarms.com/ on my previous bike but it appear a bit tedious and awkward to install it on the R1200R because of the specific technology of its electrical system.

Just need a tip or a company link
that could sale a compatible alternative to my Scorpio Alarm.

Thanks again ka5ysy but it will not work....to much stuff to do anytime I park in addition to the helmet, gloves and all the gears to manage.

The Scorpio Alarm is perfect to remotely warn me from intruders when I am around or even at night when I sleep and during daytime keep in respect most of the peoples that hang out a little too much around the luggages.

As my mechanic said There is a ways to transfer the Scorpio alarm on the R1200R by only connecting it on the parking light in then headlights...some features will not work anymore except the perimetrical sensors and maybe the internal battery system but I am not sure if connected this way how the alarm will be powered when the bike will be parked.

The BMW alarms are expensive and do not even have remote control... the sensors also are placed in front of the bike therefore are more dedicated to bike theft more that luggage protections.

This is why I am asking on this thread a replacement solution to this Scorpio Alarm...

Maybe I'm missing something here, but if you already have an alarm system you like, why can't you simply wire it directly to the battery? It just seems pointless to be looking for an entire new system, when a simple wiring job (new mechanic?) could be a solution.

I am ok to lose certain function of my alarm because its not really compatible.

I just need the alarm and its internal battery to be powered and the perimeter sensors to work effectively.

I still don't really understand what a can-bus is !
Is it what I need to still plug this alarm and not taking the risk to mess up my bike system ?

I installed a Scopio alarm on my 12R by wiring it directly to the battery, and not to anything else. It took about 10 minutes.
I didn't bother with the signal or headlight flashing function, just the perimeter sensor.
The alarm box is stuck to the battery, the motion sensor is under the very back of the seat stuck to the frame. The sensor is only effected by metal, not plastic, by mounting the sensor here it essentially made a "blind" spot directly behind the bike, working out perfect for me to put my tent directly behind the bike so I wouldn't set off the alarm while sleeping, but have my campsite "protected".
It worked quite well, though it only went off when I forgot to disarm it in the morning... raccoon's don't set it off.
I had the sensitivity set so it would start chirping when you are about 5 feet from the bike (except coming from directly behind). I played with it a bit, you could mount the sensor near the battery to get slightly better coverage for the luggage area, this is just worked for what I wanted.

I am seeing things more clearly since I acknowledged the efficiency of the fuses box option to avoid "Fault Warning" and the bike suddenly freezing dead its electrical system. But I will read the link you posted.

I am still wondering what can happen if the computer reads a poor battery specifically because many electrical add-on are plugged and running behind a Centech fuse box ?

ChiTown on my previous bike I had 2 perimetral Scorpio alarm sensors and it worked fine just as you wrote... I talked with Scorpio Alarm and they told me that they work on about being able to tune up with the remote control the sensors sensitivity according to environment where the bike is parked. Which could resolve a problem I have when I switch from parking my bike in Malibu to highly populated environments such as Downtown Los Angeles.

If I am not wrong I am still planning to order the AP-2 Auxiliary Fuse Panel from centech http://www.centechwire.com/catalog/panels/ap2.shtml with the can-bus relay http://www.centechwire.com/catalog/panels/ap130.shtml that way I'll be able to connect devices such as the Scorpio alarm that need to still be turned on while the bike is parked.

That's weird what you wrote about the exclusive sensitivity of the sensors to metals because I did all kind of things naked around my bike with the 2 scorpio alarms perimetral sensors turned on and had always to turn off the alarm because of those annoying and totally unromantic little noise it generated...

By wiring directly to the battery you are bypassing the CAN-BUS completely, and unless you're drawing an ungodly amount of power the R's big alternator will have no problem keeping up. basic electronic gizmo's do not pull hardly any power. GPS, alarm, XM, ipod charger, radar detector, etc. use little power. Now when you get you and a passenger with full on Gerbings suits, gloves, socks, etc. you can use lots of power.
I also have a centech fuse box on my R, but no relay. I wanted it on all the time for the alarm, and so I could charge things and plan routes on my GPS with the bike off.

BTW, I have a brand new centech I bought for my 8GS, but there's no where to put it that I like, and I'm keeping the gadgets to a minimum, if you want to buy it I'll be happy to get rid of it. PM me.

Would you be able to take a couple of shots showing the alarm connection setup? I am thinking about SR-900 with auto-on/off and am curious how alarm would know when you turn the ignition off (alarm will supposedly engage itself 5 seconds after turning the key off). I also wonder how it would know when the ignition is turned on in order to disengage. It's using RFID so you also have to come close/step away from the bike for the alarm to engage/disengage. Which Scorpio alarm have you got on your R12R?

I spoke with Harley and Tom at Airitronix the manufacturer of Scorpio alarm but they say that one cable must be connected to the headlight or license plate to inform the alarm of the ignition status of the bike.

Difference between the SR-900 and the 600 is the RFID tag system but otherwise the cabling and unit control are exactly the same as reported by Airitronix tech assistance . In fact I own a 600 on an other bike and there is a function that turn on automatically the alarm 15 secondes to few minutes after you turn off the bike, to make this same features wireless I think they just added an RFID modul/function on the SR-900.

I am thinking going trough a trade in program with Scorpio Alarm to shift easily from 600 to 900 but still trying to figure out how I will install it safely behind a relayed centech fuse box.

It could be useful that members of this forum
start drawing/scan/upload their own diagrams to illustrate their post.


I myself will do it too as soon as I'll be able to figure out completely
what should be physically done on my bike.

Here is the latest communication from Aritronix:

"Greg,

Yes you can connect the black wire in the GEN-1 kit to the battery negative
(-) side. The 2 grey wires only cause the signals to flash and are
optional. The orange wire should be connected but if not you lose all
ignition triggers/features. The orange wire is how the alarm knows when
someone has hotwired your bike and can page your remote. It is also how the
auto arming/disarming works when using the SR-i900 alarm. This wire needs
to be connected to a wire that only has power when the key is turned "on".
The orange wire normally gets connected to the tail light or license plate
power wire. Let me know if you have any other questions.
