I have a 08 R12R that still has it's original fuel strip, it still works normally, knock on wood. I live in California, ethanol type fuel is all that's available here unless you buy race gas or aircraft gas.
I do add Seafoam fuel additive from time to time. The marine industry likes the stuff as it does help counteract some of the moisture issues they have with ethanol type fuels.
Whether that has any bearing on fuel strip failures or not I have no clue.
What Don said may be right on, there's always a faster cheaper way but not always better.
