Head Lamp cracked-Alternatives?

Post by eburr »

Looking for best, most cost effective alternative for replacing front cracked headlight housing/lense. I see several aftermarket ones on ebay for $126-130. What has your experience been?

I was hoping someone had an answer for you on your question. I have been watching for a reply because I need a replacement also.
Did you ever come up with anything?

I've had a cover on since the bike was new, but I've been keeping an eye out for a replacement (just to have one) but have never seen one.
Good luck.

I've also been hoping someone had some input on this. Mine ('07 R1200R) has been cracked for a long time. I couldn't justify the $300 dealer price so I put a very thin film of clear silicone over the crack to keep water out. It works but the crack is kind of ugly.

On mine I never remember hitting anything to cause the crack and just kind of noticed it one day. There's no sign of any impact. When I asked the dealer about it they claimed they never saw anything like that before.

Gary - your dealer is feigning ignorance. The '07 had a defect in the headlight lens that would cause it to crack, usually with a single long vertical crack. Most dealers at the time covered it under warranty. My '07 did that on it's inaugural long trip before the flaw was known, so I got stuck paying for the replacement. I've had a Cee-Bailey shield over mine ever since (once broke the shield on a cross-US trip..) and haven't experienced any more cracks. Unfortunately, Cee-Bailey stopped making stuff for motorcycles.

$300?? Really? I picked up a stone a few years ago that cracked mine and the lens insert was only $180 from the dealer and can't be more than 30 minutes to install if you have them do it.

Yes, they're around $300 with the tax now. Max BMW has them for $276.

It looks like there was a design change in 2015. When this was no longer a regular production item the price probably went up.

I guess this is FYI for someone looking for a headlight shield;

I lost the aftermarket shield I had on my headlight for a lot of miles to an unfortunate encounter with a pot hole in Northern California, didn't notice it was gone till I did the after trip clean up. The original one I had came from a company in Australia that I put on in 2007 when the bike was new and it did take a few good hits over the years.
I replaced it with one made by AeroFlow, it's actually a nicer design and it's still available.

Hmm, that's concerning. I thought the $180 was bad enough. Thanks for the info!
