All keys locked in system case :

Post by LeonardoNYC »

After getting a great deal on 2011 classic from a great seller, I traveled an hour and a hal to pick up he bike. Owner left keys inside the systems case on the right side. Sadly he did not know you could lock the case with the key inside. In this case all the keys are inside the locked case. Even the plastic case.

Owner is extremely apologetic and frankly I never knew those case could lock without keying it locked. Is it worth calling a local locksmith to pick the lock? We don’t want to drill or anything damaging to lock or case.
If picking isn’t an option we have to go the route or ordering a new key which will take at least two business days.

Ughh..turns out the key for the case is not the same as the ignition as the owner had bought the cases used. Seems to be a few videos on picking these with some good success...
Good things come to those who wait, right?

You live in the city??? Go out and ask the first kid you see to pick the lock. Give him $10. :)

The owner was able to unscrew the "screws" on the bottom of the case so we got in. Whew!!

You can lock the cases without the key? What, do you turn the key to "lock" before closing and cinching it?

Exactly. After opening the lid, and with the case standing open, the key position will be "Open," and the flapper toggle will be sticking up.

If you then rotate the key to the "Lock" position, the key can be removed while the case remains standing open.

The lid can then be pushed closed, and the flapper toggle pressed down. The case will then be locked. If you inadvertently put the key inside the case before closing the lid, the key will be locked inside. If you lock the case and remove the key, first thing put the key in your pocket or in the ignition.

The design would be ergonomically superior if the key could only be removed from the keyway if the case had already been closed,

Reminds me of how you turn the parking lights on, in that without the key you cannot turn them off!
