spring run 2011 uk

Post by borderbiker »

Right folks , I ve been speaking to grw rockster who is in wales, and dave lee another scottish rider and we are thinking about a run possibly an overnighter in spring next year. Just putting this thread on to gauge interest. There was one this summer about a run but nothing came of it, so we"ll try again. just suggestions at the moment for dates,if anyone is interested ,and location, but we were thinking yorkshire dales or peak district would be good middle ground for those who have shown interest so far. Camping or B & B open to suggestions. If thewre is enough people interested , i"m happy to look into finding campsites or accomodation, lets see how it goes. :)

I'm up for it. :) Sorry for not being organised enough this year to get the other one sorted. :(

For campsites - I'm actually running a weekend on the 1st May Bank Holiday at Lumb Farm in Derbyshire - it's a pub (with good food) that does camping (including large fires) on a site that's off-road and very easy to find. :) (I think there is B&Bs nearby too).
The weekend is actually a "Memorial Meet", for online bikers (do a search, I've mentioned it before, and what it's all about).
All welcome to attend. :)

RB. Just had a look at your Memorial Run topic. Sounds good to me - right sort of area for it to be not too far for anyone to tavel from any direction, right sort of time for some half-decent weather possible (I'm an optimist  ). As it's already in the works as well, then it's a simple solution, and also of anyone was forced to pull out, it's not going to have a big effect on the event. Definitely worth considering IMO.

I would be up for that too, since a venue and date has already been set for it. Just need to try and get the weekend off work.

The 2011 Mem Meet is set for the same date (1st weekend in May), as this year (2010). I've already paid a deposit. :)

RB - what's the cost to cover entry to the bash and camping for the weekend at Lumb Farm? Do you want/need/require payment in advance, or pay-on-arrival?
I seem to recall from the reading I did that you needed about a tenner a head toward the event overheads in 2010, with any surplus going to charity? Will 2011 be on the same lines?

G.
G- it'll be on the same lines - enough for me to cover hiring the place, going to me either before hand, or on the day (will sort that out nearer the time), and after that, everyone has full choice of how they want to spend their money for the rest of the weekend - ie pay for meals in the pub (food was good!) or bring their own and cook in the camping field - the owners are happy to do it either way. Last year most people bought meals and enjoyed them. (the breakfasts were excellent!)

I'll sort out exactly what the costs per person will be nearer the time - I can't remember exactly what it was last time, £10 per head sounds about right to me (we have the place for 2 nights).

Any excess from the payments (and any extra donations - we normally do a charity whip round as well on the day) goes to a charity of the groups choosing (normally chosen by a poll on the main forum that most people use). Often it goes to a smaller charity that someone from the group has had help from.

Just an update - please see the thread in "Group Rides". I've had to adjust the per head cost to £15 to cover the costs, I hope this isn't too much for anyone thinking of attending.

Hello Riceburner / Borderbiker and all!

I haven't logged in for a while - working on the house and general work chaos (spend too much time at work in front of a screen already [-( too) so I've been AWOL for a bit.

Anyway - I'm still up for a spring run / meet on the Rockster - will tote the good lady along too if we can arrange it. I need to read up on posts to get up to speed - but a quick scan suggest £15/head at Lumb Farm end April (I'll read & catch up). Count me in as at least one person though (if there are still spots open for the meet that is). If some money is needed for camping/whatever up front etc. please let me know and I'll stump up.

While in the winter wilderness I've found time for tinker (as well as ride) the bike a bit - The Rockster now sports an MRA Screen and GS handlebars (the latter picked new up for a third of the extortionate BMW price off FleaBay), and a set of panniers (Fleabay cheaply again). Result - it now looks even weirder than before (the screen is stuck up pretty high to work cos of the GS Bars) which concerns me not at all, but (for me) I find the riding position far more natural and comfy and makes it easier to throw about. A welcome bonus is that the bar change has actually made the seat far more comfortable as well!

Roll on the warmer (and hopefully drier) weather! A trip to Austria is on the drawing board for the summer too - fingers crossed!

Just to clarify - the £15 cover charge is ONLY applicable if you're camping! (I'm not going to ask anyone to pay me money just to turn up for the Memorial Meet!). The £15 covers my costs of hiring the camping site and a portaloo for 2 nights. Any "profits" made will go to a charity. :)

Riceburner....

I've PM'd you in reply, and have sent the payment for camping via the PayPal account you gave me for myself and GF.

I've changed the oil & filter and balanced the TB's last friday evening, so... all I need to do now is get some fresh boots on the Bimmer (Pilot Power Front and Pilot Road II both just about finished now after 5000 miles - I saw the last of them off really over the weekend in the Brecon Beacons) and we'll be ready! I'll see everyone there on the 29th!

Here's hoping for some decent weather for the camping weekend, and that BorderBiker and a few others can make it.

Just a quick line to thank Riceburner for the invitation and the Lumb Farm Mem Meet over the weekend.

Myself and GF Lisa turned up on the Friday and met a friendly eclectic bunch of keen motorcyclists who made us welcome. Even the weather was kind to us - apart from being a bit windy it was sunny and warm. It's a shame none of the other Rockster owners made it along, but at least RB's Burnt Orange one had my Citrus bike for company to prove there are some others in existence.

One of the fuel quick connectors fractured on the way home - luckily it didnt fail altogether and I managed to limp back to GF's where I've bodged a temporary repair using the hacksawed outer body from a metal ball-point pen to link the 2 x 8mm fuel pipe sections together. This should see me ok to get to work in the am. I've ordered some metal replacements on-line today to prevent a re-occurrence - next time it could be a long way from home. I'm going to carry some fuel pipe and a piece of 5/16" copper pipe on my next continenetal trip as well in case!

Thanks again RB - it was good to meet you and all the others - both of us enjoyed the weekend and had a good time.

Hi RB,

Long time since posting here (or anywhere). Been a bit hectic as I foolishly agreed on a whim to join some mates who decided randomly to have a crack at doing the CHAR 75-mile charity raft race on the River Wye. The race was over the last May BH weekend, but of course in the run up to that there was the small matter of building a raft, trying to get a bit fitter to tackle it and so on. Whatever, we made the start and completed the event, and now I have a bit more time.

I'd like to do another meet before next year if I can manage it! I have a week in Brittany on the bike with GF in August, then got a bike trip to Grossglockner, Austria in Sept (taking in the Stelvio Pass etc. en route). So that's beating my leave entitlement and my wallet to death for 2011 pretty much. But if there's something going on with TRC I'll keep an eye out and keep in touch!

Not too sure if I'll be able to talk Lisa into camping again quite so soon though - we had to camp for 3 days at the Raft Race!

Sounds good! Are you going to the GrossGlockner Hill Climb? My dad want's to do it on one of his Classics.

There's a camping weekend coming up in July - details on TRC. :)

I've read something about the Grossglockner Hillclimb on the ole interweb. I also know it's generally held in Sept - but couldn't find any dates for this years event. I was kinda hoping it'd be on while we were there, but thought we'd be damn lucky for it to fall just right.

You (or your Dad!) don't happen to know the dates do you? Me and 2 mates have already got our Gasthof booked in Malta, Austria, and will be based in the region from Sat 10th Sept to about the 14th. If the Hillclimb was on that weekend that would be the icing on the cake! If it is, give us yer Dad's bike and race number and we'll give him a wave as he goes by!

We are leaving this Septic Pile early on the Sept 7th (think we are gonna try out the Newhaven-Dieppe Crossing for a change - it means we don't have to schlep all the way round the M4 / M25 and Maidstone to Dover/Folkestone which has to be a bonus). Hoping to ride down to Riems / St Dizier area by the end of Day 1, and aim to make time so we can ride down over the passes to Bolmio, then ride the Stelvio from South to North and then head on up to Grossglockner, arriving in Malta on the 10th. From there we hope to make runs out into Slovenia / N.Italy as well as The Grossglockner and other goodies in the locale.

I'm really looking forward to it - it has the potentialto be a really nice road trip!

Not tempted to join yer ole man and get yourself over there as well then RB?
