My ride to the island for the world supa's.

Post by DJ Downunder »

Yesterday I rode down to Phillip Island for the first round of the World Superbikes and took a few pictures.

I'd only been riding a short while before I was reminded of the horrific bushfires that devastated Victoria last week.

This spot was just out of Cranburn.

Image

I was then on the main road to Phillip Island.

Image

Once at the track I parked at the top of Lukie Heights and watched the bikes go past.. It was just a practice session.

Image

Image

I then moved further around the track and noticed some nice old bikes.

Image

I then parked against the fence and watched the bikes enter the last sweeping corner before hitting the main straight.

Image

I talked to this nice lady sitting nearby but she didn't have much to say.

Image

I then rode around to the main straight and where the motorcycle expo was.

Image

Inside the expo I checked out the new bikes.. I liked the new naked Honda.

Image

Honda wins for the most ugly new bike.

Image

Speaking of ugly.. What have Suzuki done with the great SV650.

Image

I considered getting some new molded ear plugs but couldn't decide what color to get.

Image

Back outside the support class bikes whizzed past.

Image

I then moved down to check out the BMW spectator area.

Image

I then moved down to my favorite track possie.. turn one.

Image

I parked next to this old Norton.

Image

Image

It was then time to take a leak.. and prove to the guys in the US that the water does flow the other way.

Image

Back out and checkin' out the spectators bikes.

Image

I sat down on the grass next to my bike and using my molded ear plugs and radio in my phone I tuned into the track commentary.

Image

I had a big screen in front of me so I could see the crashes that were out of my sight.

Image

Troy looked great on the new BMW1000RR.. Here he is coming out of the pits.

Image

Here again going past and sounding like a ..er..Jap bike.

Image

This is looking towards Smiths beach and Woolami in the distance.

Image

I turned my bike towards the track.. put it on the center stand.. sat on my bike.. popped open a coke and watched the action.

Image

The day cleared to a nice fine and sunny day.. That's about it.

Looks like fun to me!!! I heard the nekid Honda will not be coming to the States...it's too bad, since they took the 919 away from us too!
Thanks for sharing. DJ.

Great to see your pictorials again! Your bike's a classic.

Great report DJ! I'm always amazed at how close you can get to these things, and seem to be able to park just about anywhere you please. However, I only spotted one girl...and she was a blowup doll. Where was the usual line-up of ladies?

Thanks for the report DJ, good to see BM's have a production bike on the scene.

You mentioned..."I sat down on the grass next to my bike and using my molded ear plugs and radio in my phone I tuned into the track commentary" would appreciate if you would please comment on the performance of the molded ear plugs with speakers when riding? I have tried noise reduction ear buds, but have found them unsatisfactory, so am reticent to invest in the wired molded plugs without "hearing" an unbiased appraisal.

cheers

I think molded ear plugs are the way to go.. No problem getting your helmet on or off and diss-lodging them.. and you can turn the volume down on the music because they work so well.. and even tho they work well you can still talk and hear someone talking with them in... I recommend them.

I would only give the sound quality about 8 out of 10 but I'm a fussy HI Fi guy and it's mostly the highs that they lack.. but with road and wind noise it's not that noticeable.

I also recommend having them made in a different color for each ear because it so easy to try and put the wrong one in the wrong ear.. :D

Hope that helps.

Thanks DJ for the story, great as always. I was in Australia for my honeymoon, 12/30-1/15. Thought about you when I saw oilhead's on the road from Melbourne to Sydney. That leg of the trip along the south east coast was a stunner. You are a lucky man and beautiful land
