Knoxville-Helen-Cherohala Skyway

Post by ScottSuff »

Took a little ride down to Helen, Ga last Fri. and returned to Knoxville on Sat. Went down on state highways 68,123,129 and 75 since we went south of Helen.

This pic is outside of Helen on a short stop. Next to the R bike is a bud with his 80000 mile RT.

After a good meal and some beverages Fri. night, the next morning we took off for Brasstown Bald. It's the highest spot in GA at 4784 ft and highways 75 and 180 are great roads to ride getting there. You have a little of everything as you cruise through the Chattahoochee National Forest. The pictures are from on top the bald. You see the parking lot below because you have to hike .6 mile to get to the top. If you look close you can see a couple guys watching the bikes. After this stop we worked our way north on highways 75, 69, 64, 74, and 129 to Robbinsville, NC.

From there, we jumped on the Cherohala Skyway to Tellico Plains. It was about 46 F and a few clouds but the area had some wildfires going, so we had some smoke to go with the scenic ride as well.

Made one last stop at Tellico Plains at Tellico Motorcycle Outfitters. http://skur.net/tellico/home.html

Yes! All great roads all through that area. If you wander around north Georgia a little more you will find even more. Another area in northwest Georgia and northeast Alabama is often overlooked, but next time turn a little sharper to the right as you head down this way and you're sure to be surprised.

BTW, our Georgia Mtn Rally is coming up May 1st in Hiawassee. We always have a great time and as you already know, the riding is superb.
Thanks for the report. I like your R1200R. I just might be getting one of those in the near future. I'm trying to decide between that and the F800ST.

Ride both the 800ST and the R bike. I think you'll go for the R but I'm a fan of the R1200.

Some great roads, thanks for the report. I'm going to the GA Rally and agree the side roads require dedicated time to explore and enjoy.

If I went for an 800 it would be the GS to enjoy it's lighter weight on tighter trails. etc. For the improved gravel roads I find myself on the rr is fine.

Test ride time is always a good time.
