Arkansas in Autumn

Post by GypsyRR »

Okay - since Boxermania has to bow out, and since I did just come back from Arkansas, I'll take on some responsibility for getting something put together for an Autumn Ride if we want it in Arkansas.

HOWEVER

1. I've never been to a motorcycle gathering/rally/bash. So I have no idea what I'm suppose to do.
2. I need some serious coaching on what needs to be done and what is expected for a gathering since I've never been to one.
3. I need to know asap what date is convenient for most and who would come if I did get something securred.

a) October in Arkansas is "color changing" time so trying to get a group of rooms would be difficult. Our best bet would be the last of September or the first of November. o I assume other "touristy" type spots do as well.
b) I have only visited Arkansas once in my life and only stopped by 2 possible motels. See my Arkansas Traveler report and decide between those two - or give me other suggestions.
c) Keep in mind that camping is a possibility as well.

4. There are other people more familiar with Arkansas who could step up and at least give me some pointers on roads and places to stay. What location would give the best options for riding?
5. If you read my report, you see that meals are a minor priority for me. So if there are organized meals, I need to know how many. THREE a day???? Good grief, we'll be too stuffed to ride!

I am probably not the best candidate for organizing anything - but I am willing.

Just know in advance that you can't complain if you don't contribute, and you can't complain if you don't participate, and you can't complain because I'm a girl and I would get my feelings hurt "and start some drama. You don't want no drama" (courtesy of the Hip Hop group "The Blackeyed Peas"). Plus - it's all new to me, so don't complain - just tell me what I should do or help me.

Thanks -

Let the suggestions begin so something can be booked.

Aww MAN!!! Do we have to have a GIRL lead this thing??
Image

Just kidding. I couldn't resist.
I'm in, but I'll tell you now Sept. 17-21st is my week off and that would be best for me.

I helped Whaycoc with the first Bash and I think you should just pick an adequate place and tell us what to send. Either of those spots in your report would work for me. Then those who like to camp can easily find a spot somewhere nearby...in back of a church....or beside a convenience store. Don't laugh! That's been done.

This gang likes to eat, so if there is someplace to sit down for a dinner, that is a requirement.

I can't think of anything else right now. But Cam will enlighten us with lots of good ideas pretty quick here.

Gypsy,

Here is the simplest approach.

1. You pick the date, announce it, stand firm on it AND set a cut off time after which you will cancel everything for lack of interest. Either Sep 28-30 or November 2-4 are on the table. Pick one and stand your ground. To quote a notorious and infamous planner, "Democracy sucks!"

BY the way, you pick either of those and I AM coming.

2. Negotiate with the proprietor of the place (again either of the ones you mentioned) for a group rate, firm times and determine what her cut-off time is to reserve for you. That becomes your cut-off time for the attendees to commit. (You can go motel, campground and both.)

No mercy. Otherwise you will be nickle and dimed by every single one of us Beemer Babies about how that interferes with the WVU-Louisville game or how we are committed to our daughter's horse show that weekend.

Finally, tell 'em that if they want a planned dinner, route maps, group rides, door prizes or whatever that THEY can be your sub-chairman for that event. And hold them to it. You are not responsible for the whole shebang. Delegate or ruthlessly ignore.

HTH

ADDENDUM

Phil, you type too fast!

Gypsy, See Phil already has 'special requests'!
(Although in his case it is a pretty good one)

ADDENDENUMAGAIN

I vote for the Ozark motel. I vote for November 2-4. My vote counts.

I aint never been ta kansas.

Just kidding, Arkansas sounds great for a fall trip. I've not been riding very much so far this year so I'm looking to really rack up the miles from here on out. I'd try to make this gathering if at all possible.

More:

Priapasmic (sp) has 'volunteered' to plan and publish route maps and possibly lead a group ride for those who wish to. He said so, I swear!

BiffsRR has a week off that he has not yet planned...he can be counted on to arrive for this event. (He is exempt from planning duties because he found the Lafayette Hotel for Bash III Marietta.)

That makes 6 committed so far:

GypsyRR, Boxer (with caveats), MikeCam
DyZKYSD, Priapasmic, BiffsRR

And so it begins!

Mike's dates work for me, although the November date is probably better.

Once a site is established near food, planning can be minimal! Someone local can chime in with some recommended roads and someone else can locate the nearest source of beer!

Place to stay, food, good roads and an adult beverage at the end of the day. All else is trivial!

Ahem .... "Priapismic" (look it up, the word is a fitting name for me) WILL plan and publish route maps and even lead a group ride *IF*:

- the ultimate destination is known well in advance (i.e. Ozark, Eureka Springs, Mountain Home, Gypsy's favorite Hot Springs), AND,

- somebody else volunteers to do all the GPS planning and publishing of waypoints and coordinates and all the other mumbo-jumbo that the GPS geeks like, as I'm an old-school guy who strictly does maps. Not that I don't appreciate what GPS can do, I just haven't invested in the hardware yet; for the money, there are so many more farkles I can get for the bike or for me. Or invest in trips. AND,

- our planned date is anything other than November 2nd - 4th. As I said in Gypsy's Great Rides post, I am already committed to the Texas Hill Country for that weekend. End of September, or just about any time in October, I can do.

Otherwise, Mikecam is right about the planning part, Gypsy. Just follow that advice and you'll be fine.

http://www.arkansas.com/helpful-info/weather/

I think realistically (except the weather has been kind of weird in this part of the country this year), that the end of Oct and first of Nov would be pretty mild and really pleasant for riding during the day and probably cold after dark. I'm guessing 50's in the early morning and 70's when the sun is up.

From what I have read, the last of Oct and first of Nov is when the colors are at their peak as well.

According to Weatherbase.com, for Eureka Springs, Arkansas:

Sept. avg. high temp - 82, avg. low temp - 59

Oct. avg. high - 71, avg. low - 48

Nov. avg. high - 59, avg. low - 37

All numbers are in degrees Fahrenheit.

Keep in mind that early November will not be as extreme as November averages might suggest, nor will late September be as warm as those averages suggest.

I do have Oct 6-13 off of work, but I should be able to move things up a b it or back a bit.

My only concern is that I may have too many teeth for Arkansas.

Gypsy, get a place and a date, and the other crap will fall into place. Trust me.

I vote for the first weekend in Nov.
I'll be riding to Big Bend National PK the last weekend in Oct, and Arkansas is sorta on the way back to Florida.

I've been wanting to check out Arkansas.

Thanks for stepping to the plate Gypsy.

A decision has been made, so please see the other thread related to the ARKANSAS IN AUTUMN RIDE '07 and get ready to schedule some time to ride in the beautiful mountains of Arkansas.
