Where would you go?

Post by 12bar1 »

The wife and I would like to start planning a 2 week motorcycle vacation but we are having a hard time deciding where to go. We are located in west central Florida (Tampa Bay area). We have considered shipping our bikes to the west coast and starting there. So the $64K question is if you had two weeks where would you go.

Down gray roads. Anywhere.

I realize there are lots of reasons to ship a bike somewhere. Like to avoid burning up your precious rubber across Kansas, or saving your butt for nice twistie day rides, or riding with the wife and kids to a vacation they too can enjoy...But you don't really have to go far to have a great ride for two weeks, and the ride out of the driveway to points unknown are the greatest.

Look at Virginia and West Virginia and Northwest NC. Ride down the coast of NC, SC, GA and Florida. Or just head on up into Pennsylvania and New York, Vermont.

I know this isn't a group ride, but I moved to this forum because threads about ride planning go best here.

Pick a couple of points of interest, and just connect the dots. Gettysburg could be a destination, but the real fun would be in getting there. Use US Highways as opposed to Interstates. and stay away from cities. When are you going?

I like your idea. I live in the east, and if I had 2 weeks I would go to the West. From north FL, many places east of the Mississippi are reachable in 3 days.

but the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Northern CA, come to mind if I had 2 weeks to play.

ah, a few more years....

I'd go back up to the Canadian Rockies. I just got back from there and could easily spend a month or two up there taking pictures.

Then again, since I've been there, I'm starting to look at Nova Scotia (Cabot Trail) for next year.

If you haven't been here, the Colorado mountains are fabulous, with some really spectacular twisty roads, old mining towns, and lots to do when you are off the bike (rafting, hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, narrow gauge rail rides, history tours, etc.). I'd start in SW Colorado in the San Juan Mountains, say Durango, and just motor around the entire area. We Coloradans love it!!

Come to Upstate NY

Post by Daryl_stamp »

The Finger Lakes are gorgeous.
Lots of great state parks, good roads, places to stay & if you feel like it you can go to NYC or Canada in a day.

Windscreen

Post by Daryl_stamp »

I have no idea, was on the bike when I picked it up (used) a few weeks ago.
Dealer mechanics liked it too.
Downside is that is wobbles up & down.
Upside is that it wobbles up & down creating a modulating affect.
A little concerned about premature lamp failure, but appreciate extra vis.

The Finger Lakes area is interesting to me as I am originally from North Western NY (Batavia). I haven't been back in about 30 years so it would be fun to see the area again. When is the best time of the year to visit the Finger Lakes area.

I have gone up for the Finger Lakes Club Rally on Labor Day weekend.
Yes, Ernesto showed up this year and brought rain, but 2 years ago we had 80 degree days and 65 degree nights. It is a well done rally.

Fairing on the bike

Post by RobMason »

That is a Fallert fairing, they do not ship from Germany for liability issues. I have one unpainted in a box sent by a friend I know who lives in Germany, but No instructions, just a fairing, wind screen and a bag of brackets and bolts. If any one out there has instructions on installation, please contact me.

Depending on your fortitude, I actually recommend that you go through some cities during your riding vacation. I love riding into D.C. and New York City. This is riskier than riding in the mountains, but I find the feeling exhilirating.
