College football

Post by iowabeakster »

A little early for this topic this year...

But you gotta check Hawkeye offensive lineman, Josh Koeppel, take on a pick-up truck.

He's basically OK... gonna miss the first game on Sat.

I have a couch just waiting for the Mountaineers to finish the job. 8th best overall record this millennium.... but can never close the deal.

Best ever seasons occurred when the pre-season polls listed us just outside or barely within the Top 25. Noel Devine - a true Heisman candidate. Jock Sanders another maybe candidate. Two good quarterbacks, great defense, weak offensive line.

Gators had a poor showing today. The score does not tell the correct story. (34 to 12 I think it was) John Brantley struggled the whole game and Miami Ohio played a seriously better offensive game, consistently. They were just plagued by penalties. They, the Gators don't deserve #4, and I'm sure after today they will go down in the polls.

But I'm still a Gator, no matter what.

This is the same for the modern Hawkeyes... which has me nervous about the pre-season rank of #8 (or #10 or #6). They perform better when they don't have the national "respect". Not much coverage of the Mountaineers around here... but I have a soft spot for them.

Boxer... I wouldn't worry too much about the shaky first game in college ball. That's why so many of them schedule a cupcake the first week. Iowa nearly choked on their cupcake last year. But, sorry...I have no soft spot for the Gators. I was cheering for 'Bama all year. Tebow crying was fantastic.

Where's Jeff?

I need to vent about the new Big Ten (eleventwelve) divisions. I am happy with Nebraska... and the conf. championship game. But, they took away one of our favorite annual games (Wisconsin... and one of Wisky's favorite games too)... and gave us a "protected Rivalry" with Purdue? I don't even know what state Purdue is in...

The only way to lower the enthusiasm of an Iowa fan for a game with Purdue, requires the supervision on an anesthesiologist. No offense to Purdue fans, but there just isn't any rivalry there at all.

Wisky should have been in the same division as Iowa and Minnesota. Give the other division Michigan, if need be.

Mountaineer Update:

Week 1 - defeated Coastal Carolina but showed weakness in executing offense as intended.
Week 2 - surprising defensive weakness versus Marshall. To Marshall's credit, 1st year coach Doc Holliday is a multi-year WVU associate coach and chief recruiter until this job. He was prepared and his boys performed to exploit every WVU weakness - near upset the 'Eers which would have been well deserved by the Herd.

Bonus: Michigan shows the speed, explosive options, and sheer tenacity of the RichRod style. Takes three years to undo the Lloyd Carrness that rode a 1997 NatChamp to ruin. Once the whiny "Michigan Men" were ousted, RichRod's plan started to reach maturity. Good year in the offing.

Mike,

The Marshall game... that must have been a fun time watching that one. :D Now you know what Bipolar disorder must feel like.

Denard Robinson... wonder-boy-freak-show-o-matic...Holy crap...

Iowa gets to see the show in person on Oct 16 @ Michigan. At my Hawkeye discussion site (Black Heart Gold Pants... which is awesomely hilarious... http://www.blackheartgoldpants.com/), there's been some questions of how long Denard lasts until he gets hurt. How many times can you let your little quarterback (6'00'" 193 lbs) to take 28 carries a game until he gets squished like a grape? My guess... he won't make it out of the Michigan State game in one piece.

That may be wishful thinking. Iowa is the following week. By that time, he'll be really sore and worn down, if he's not seriously hurt. The Iowa defense will get two weeks of rest and preparation, for the game against Michigan. The Iowa game will drive a stake through the heart of every Wolverine in the nation, if it doesn't happen sooner.

Florida looked much better to me on Saturday. Brantley is throwing with much more confidence and the Brantley/Demps combo could make up for the missing TEBOWISM....However, Chris Rainey is out for being arrested on a stalking charge this week. WTF!

First of all, Purdue is in Indiana.
Second, I didn't like how the Big Ten split up the divisions.
Third, the Gators were absolutely beat down by the Crimson Tide.
Fourth, I hope the couch makes it long enough to help you celebrate Mike.

ps - I have no idea why Iowa and Purdue ore the protected rivalry? Maybe it has to do with both teams having the same colors(cept Purdue's is old gold).

There's Jeff...

What didn't you like about the Big 10 divisions?
Is it true that the Buckeyes get drunk before the Illinois game every year, just to make it more interesting?

Also, I have clearly been mistaken about the rivalry with Purdue...Big (ten) Brother says so...

How could I forget something like that???

My big Ten split would have been:

East
Penn State
Ohio State
Indiana
Purdue
Michigan
Michigan State

West
Illinois
Northwestern
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Iowa
Nebraska

Jeff, I agree with your divisions. That's what I wanted to see.

Who's this "Michigan"? I think they are just a legend from times of yore... You must be talking about about Sparty....

Michigan must learn to play pass defense, or the rest of their season is going to be really pathetic. The offense is plenty good. The Hawkeyes tried to sit on a lead that wasn't yet big enough. They should have kept throwing. Anybody (decent) that keeps throwing can beat Michigan.

Wisky finally showed what I had been worried about, Clay is a beast, and with White, their running game could beat anybody. I'm just hoping they have a big emotional let-down next week.

THE game is this weekend: LSU/Auburn, a game which I think, sadly, my Tigers will lose to War Eagle.

Florida Who?

After (barely) beating WVU at night, at home, the Tigers are my new second favorite team. I need them to win and will cheer them on - until and unless we meet again in a BCS Bowl.

I wouldn't bet on it. Stopping Newton is all LSU has to do.
