First weekend home....
No bike,
no distraction,
no ride to take me from domestic bliss.
BLISS?
I been cleaning, moving, hanging, shifting, washing, hosing, WORKING, and taking a couple showers a day! Garage is not yet cleared & clean, but at least 'stuff' has been thrown away. Ahh but the patio....
The back patio, a work in progress, has gotten my attention since early this morning. It needs a fountain now, some plants, a cool evening, and cigar to go with my Red wine and Molinari salami; tonight maybe.

Upon selling the Roadster, I set out to find a slow Bonneville. I wanted somebody's 2002 Bonnie with no mods, and at a price to die for.... But the dark shadow that occasionally visits itself upon us, that force tempting fate (against our better judgment), that force they call "The Dark Side", got the better of me: Somebody offered to sell me a 2004 107 horsepower Triumph Sprint RS for five grand. It'll exceed 150 mph, but I only got it up to 147 a couple times, over 130 daily...... Party with The Dark Side, and expect.... dark things, for me it manifested as speeding tickets and a heightened sense of "really blowing it"...... It was time to bow out of the Dark Side, I was gonna end up in either jail or a distant hospital, and I wanted neither.....
Getting my house in order (in more ways than one) is what The Light Side is asking of me now (again). The "Dark Side", it was fun while it lasted.
It's been a Great Ride.....

It just came to me, what you need is . . .
First, have an open mind to this, it may throw you a bit at first.
Are you ready?
A restored/very clean, BMW R bike with a Steib sidecar. Height of the seat is no longer a concern, speed is not a problem (sigh), classic design, a history as long as motorcycles, not a crappy trike bike, when camping or going to the supermarket it carries everything, and the list goes on.
My personal version would be an old /2, with the engine switched with an R90. The R90 still had oval cylinders and heads which look closer to the original. Electric start goes along with the engine as well as a 12 volt system. Lace the R90 wheel along with its disk brakes into that of the /2 and you are good to go.
My old R69S would cruise along at 80 with the car attached. With the mounted spare on the chair, flats were no longer a big deal.
Hmmmm . . . as I think about this more . . . you know . . . it might just be the perfect rig for Florida in a year when I totally move there and not just part-time.

Um, well, um, I'm staying out of the brand wars here. Too much like striking flint and steel in a stoicheiometrically correct roomful of gas and air.
The Ural is a pretty big seller here abouts. Their main point of importation used to be in Redmond or Bellingham or such. There are a couple owned and ridden by facilities guys here at the UofW. When they are cleaned up they are pretty nice looking bikes. I think it would be, um, difficult to get a speeding ticket on one with the side-hack. Unless you were headed down a long hill with the wind behind you...If I were cursed with rocket wrist and a sense of abandon, I'd be tempted to tone down the ride so I could keep my license. And these are definately inexpensive.

I'm sorry to hear of your woes with the law Pat. It sounds like you've done an intervention on yourself. I have ample faith however that you will find yourself awake at night pondering how wrong the universe is without a motorcycle in your life. You will in a few months time begin plotting the next two-wheeled strategy for yourself and eventually buy another bike.
It sounds like a cruiser may indeed be in the offing for you. I know on mine, I'm almost as content going at "cruising" speeds as I am leaning it over on a mountain road. There are a lot of good choices out there, both foreign and domestic.
Whatever you do in the short term, don't leave this community of riders. You'd be sorely missed. If you do, I may convince some of my New Jersey/New York friends to, uh, pay you a visit...

...bugger!...actualy glad that vid ended like that and not with a crash. Thanks for posting that...I was a wheelie freak...just like that kid...always on the rear wheel...how I survived those days...jeees I don't know.
I think one reason for buying the RR and not a Triumph speed triple (my last and other choise) was because the RR will not wheelie...and the Triumph will.
I hope Pat was not offended with the scooter and handbag post...I'm sure he knows I was just muckin' around.
I do hope Pat gets back on a bike soon and hangs around here...just like everyone else dose.

Before the Robed One I went..... for a ticket I got in a sting along the local freeway. The officer showed up; was hoping he wouldn't. The judge had before him my file as pertains to the frequency I've attended Traffic School in the past: One speeding ticket, four Traffic School sessions, and the ticket I was in court for. He offered up a verbal spanking, and why wouldn't he.... So now I have two speeding tickets on my record.
I'm going to see a Traffic Citation attorney about the most recent (unwarranted) ticket for unsafe roadway entry, or some such fabrication. It'll cost me $200.00, he says don't go to court, and the attorney works his magic with smoke & mirrors..... I can only hope to avoid this third citation showing up on my record.
I need a bike on which I would have no desire to speed. I want music, feet reaching the ground, comfort, bags, and ergos befitting a fat troll with short arms.

I still get your emails, and stories of fun to be had on your 450 mile Saturday or Sunday jaunts. I'll be back, I hope to ride again, but I simply can't afford to ride in such a fashion as to invite a third/fourth/fifth citation.
Jeez, I don't wanna take up handgun shooting again, nor brewing beer, or photography. I need something to satisfy my Limbic(sp) fix without the expenditure; I need cheap, I need excitement without the danger, I need something new & different.
But I hope to be back on two wheels again (soon), but it'll be hafta be some kind of cruiser with a relaxed attitude. And it can no way EVER be something that I allow to take every weekend of my life.... NEVER AGAIN!

Now there is an idea. A Pat run! As soon as my kid requires less maintenance, a summer road trip to Cali would fit the bill. I had lots of Harleys filling my front yard at a party of mine a couple years ago. Then it was a blend of BMWs & Harleys at last year's attendance. The motorcycle community is the one I feel most intimate with; y'all are welcome to motor over this way!
But Lord help me if the day comes that I have a gaggle of Gold Wings at an alcohol-free tofu party......
EAT, DRINK, AND BE MERRY, for fear that I dare cruise with a can of sodi pop swinging from the handlebars, and a slow FLHT, Wing, or Water Buffalo.

You know Pat, you're not the only one who's been thinking that way lately. I 'm actually considering buying a smaller, slower, dual sport bike (read: DRZ400S) as a slower and less ridden alternative to the R. The ticket I received back in December was my first ticket in a LONG time, it was due to my loafing along on the R at 20mph over, and really bummed me out. My job is also such that I must maintain a clean driving record. Now that we have a baby due in August, I'm starting to feel different about riding. I don't want to stop all together but rather, change the way I ride. I understand totally what you must be going through.
