f800gs mirrors on the cheap

Post by yim4 »

So apparently the stock mirrors for the F800GS are the same as the stock mirrors on the Aprilia Tuono, except the Tuono mirrors go for around $25 each (vs >$25 for the same mirrors from BMW). Just a heads up if anyone is looking on replacing their mirrors with these.

I believe you will still need the BMW hardware to connect the F800GS mirrors to the R1200R - the stock clamp on the bars will work, but the F800GS mirrors use a pinch method vs. threaded adapter for the mirror stalk to clamp interface for the stock R1200R mirrors. Something to keep in mind. Are the Aprilia mirrors non-threaded as well?

Wow, great find. Where did you order, and did you have to buy mounting components?

The Aprilia Tuono mirror part numbers are AP8104921 and AP8104922 and are ~$20/each at your local Aprilia dealer (http://www.apriliausa.com/en-US/dealers.aspx)

The BMW clamping base of an F800GS mirror is part 51167673982 and retails for $16/pair, according to the Max BMW parts fiche. I assume these clamps work with the Aprilias?

I assume the clamps would work as they are the same mirror, but I am going to pick up a pair at my local Aprilia dealer and see for sure ($23 each at my dealer). I have seen these mirrors next to the f800gs mirrors as both of these bikes are in my parking lot at work, and they look identical. If you google the Tuono Mirrors, you can find references on other boards that these same mirrors are actually used by Aprilia, BMW (for the F800GS), Moto Guzzi, and maybe others.

The parts manager at a South Carolina dealership that sells BMWs and Aprilias is doubtful it will work.
I have had my technician and service manager looking into this for us this morning, and even though the mirror is the exact same size it will not work on the F800GS. The mounting set/angle is competely different. It wouldn't work, even if you purchased the clamping and cover pieces that the F800GS shows. This would have been good for me to know in the future because I could by this mirror from Aprilia and save alot of money for the BMW's. But unfortunately, it is not going to work. If you happen to find a way, please let me know. — Touring Sport BMW

Here is a thread over on one of the Buell sites about the Tuono mirrors. I don't see why you would have to order anything more than just the mirrors. When I was studing doing this, we took mirrors directly off an 800 GS and dropped them in to the R he had sitting on the floor. NO fussing at all. And it sounds the same on the Buell site. Just loosen the cinch bolts, pull the stock mirrors straight out, install the new mirrors by sliding in and then tighten everything up. This was a better find than when I discovered them last winter. And I am sure from looking at the Buell site that these are the exact same mirrors.

There is another thread here confirming that these mirrors are identical, check out post #4:

I'm going to pick a pair up tomorrow without the BMW clamps and see what's up.

Ok, just tried this and it works perfectly. No need to buy the BMW clamps either, because they come with them. Just screw them in and they are good to go. ~$50 total for the whole setup.

Aprilia parts AP8104922 and AP8104921.

Ya didn't happen to snap any pics of the install did you? I'd be interested in the way they mount up. Thanks, Keith

I'll take some pics later but I'll try to describe it. The mirror comes with 2 parts, the clamp base and the actual mirror. The mirror is non-threaded, so it slips into the clamp base and is held there when the base is tightened. The clamp base is threaded and screws directly in the mirror mount on the bike. I believe the clamp base is 10mm x 1.25 threaded so should work on any bike with a standard 10mm mount. Not sure if the 1150r is threaded this way but should work if it is (don't quote me on that).

Ordered the Aprilia mirrors today from Touring Sports. Check Aprilia's response to BMW's S1000RR tablecloth ad.

Does anyone know of an F800GS discussion board? We could join the board and promote a group dual-sport ride beginning with breakfast. While they are in the restaurant eating breakfast, we can lift all their mirrors and the necessary hardware.

We would at least need to install our old round mirrors on their F800GS's ;)
