Removed the rear muffler, LOVE the sound!
Now the bike sounds like it has a healthy internal combustion engine
instead of a sewing machine motor!
I had been afraid it would be too loud or especially have that sharp rap rap rap that some of those cheap cherry bomb type car mufflers have. Rather, it just has a fairly mellow growl to it during normal driving, but "sounds off" with authority under heavy throttle.
I looked around a lot to find a chrome turn down to install on the end of the cat converter outlet, both to make it look a little more "finished" and to direct the exhaust away from my saddlebags.
Was amazed at how proud some big name mfg's are of their products, even a simple one like that!
Difficult to find one with 1-3/4 ID that will fit nicely over the CC outlet. Closest thing I could find locally (O'Reilly, Advance, Auto Zone) was a "multi fit" that was actually 2"+ ID and had setscrews to fit 2" & down to 1-1/2", but that really looked tacky with the gap created by the size difference.
Finally found an 8" long chrome "turn down" with actual 1-3/4" ID at Summit Racing for $13 & change shipped. Thought maybe I could help someone else avoid several hours of searching.

It lists it as "weld on" but being it should be a pretty close fit I would believe
one small hole drilled on the underside with a short #8 or #10 stainless sheet metal screw thru it & the CC outlet would do just fine.
I also looked at longer ones and this is the best price I found. This is a
13" long 1-3/4 ID chrome turndown at JC Whiteney for $35.

On the Summit one cut 4 slots and use the factory clamp that attaches the OEM muffler to the CC.

Here's the most elegant solution I've seen for R1150GS/R OE muffler removal and use of cat collector:
Outlet was cut at seam line and then welded back in place pointing downwards.

That turn down of the stock CC outlet is indeed neat.
I imagine that housing is likely stainless, so would pretty much
require a tig welder? Or I've worked with stainless flux core which
works OK if you know what you're about. I believe it was a gas
shielded flux core if I recall, taking argon for shielding gas instead
of CO2 as used for mild steel.
(I have figured a way to convert my wire feed into a tig machine,
except I don't have hi frequency for aluminum.)
However, all that considered, I guess I'd like a nice "finished" appearing
chrome tip on it.
I like the idea of using the original clamp - had looked at that before,
but like a real dummy I had picked it up with the curved end of the shield
up instead of down and didn't think about it other than a pipe couldn't
come out of the clamp straight the way I was holding it so put it down.

None of my local auto parts places had one. It seemed that quite a few people had them on their bikes that they would be easy to find....no dice for me!!

I looked on website of a couple locals and one did list a 1-3/4" ID
tip but when I got there it was the same 2"+ "multi-fit" as the others.
It's staggering how much good info I've picked up that I've needed and
used over the years on various forums like this so always try to post
when I find something someone else might want to know. Even if just
something only a few people might want.

How much weight did you save. I understand the stock muffler is very heavy.

I just weighed it -
got on the scale (accurate per the Dr's office)
and then picked up the muffler
11 pounds per that

I have a chrome stubby pipe if anyone wants it. I made that conversion at one point and had to return to the stock muffler. There was something about the rumble/vibration at highway speeds for extended periods that was very annoying to me.

I can understand that - but I don't do long trips.
I think the farthest I've ever gone is a 60 mile round trip.
Here's a couple options to the stock muffler

Update: Got the little turndown tip on the cat, turned at about a 45
angle down & away from the bike to avoid exhaust heat on the tire
and the saddle bags.
Mellowed the sound out nicely at the rider's position. Still sounds
great just not quite as loud. I've got bad hearing, but with a full
helmet can just hear it at 60 mph and steady throttle.

I have a slash cut pipe on mine (actually, if I'm honest, It's an offcut from a knackered Remus Y-piece, it's titanium. ) makes getting the rear wheel out SO much easier!

And, as I also discovered / realized yesterday afternoon,
cleaning the back wheel is so much easier.
The front wheel is somethng else, though!
The discs on each side make it a situation of
"I can see it but I can't get there from here".
Going to look for a small long handled round brush,
my wife said a baby bottle brush. I figured that
should work well to access all the surfaces of the
front wheel without having to try to squeeze me
hand/s in thru those discs.
Also something like a stiffer bristled toothbrush only
with longer bristled for places like inbetween the
engine fins and all those other little crevices and
inside corners BMW is so fond of creating.
And definitely going to have to break down and fix
that weepy oil fill cap.

Has anyone from California removed the muffler? Any issues w/ LEO? The reason I ask is I have been checked when riding MTN roads (even paved) for spark arrestors.
Also, have dealers / repair facilities given anyone a hard time about not having the muffler on the bike?

My son-in-law just moved from Turlock CA and has a Ducati.
He worked about 30 miles south of Turlock and rode his bike
quite a bit. He had removed the muffler back to the cat
and rode it that way for at least 3 or 4 years and he never
mentioned having any problems.

I just took off the muffler on mine after reading this post. You are right! It sounds awesome! I ordered the 13" chrome pipe for it too. I think I'll have to do something to prevent the bag from melting though. Maybe a heat shield?
Might as well face it...I'm addicted to motorcycles... Might as well face it...

Let me email him and ask, but I seem to remember him saying it
didn't have to be smogged - I think he removed the charcoal canister
and everything he could take off.
I'll post when I hear.
That 13" (if it's the one I posted) has a turndown that should direct
the exhaust down & out if you position it that way, so it shouldn't
affect a bag or luggage any. If you've still got the cat on, that
straight pipe shouldn't be any hotter, probly less actually becuz of
less surface area, than the stock muffler.
Even if it's a slash cut so the exhaust comes straight out, I would
tend to doubt it will harm your bag unless it rests right on the pipe.
If it wasn't too close to the muffler, I wouldn't think you'd have to
worry cuz it's smaller diameter so a little farther away.

i took the permanent route.
i used j-b weld. cost $6 on amazon and took me about 10min to apply it and let it dry overnight. now it looks awesome!!
