Charging the battery of a 2002 R1150R

Post by makia »

Hi
I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for easily charging the battery of R1150R year 2002 as far as I know the tank has to be removed to get at the battery. Can the the battery be charged through the power outlet? Or is it better to make up a charging point.
Any ideas would be fantastic.

Many Thanks

Nick

mine came with a trickle charger with power outlet converter. so i charge directly to the power outlet. make sure that if u have a power outlet, it's connected to a unswitched fuse or the battery directly. u can tell by measuring the voltage when the ignition is off

Yes, the battery can be trickle charged through the outlet... but not jump-started.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

I've also heard that you can remove the starter cover on the left side near the power outlet and use the connection there that has a heavy gauge wire direct to the battery for both charging and jumping. Have not tried that yet, but plan to

This adapter plug works great. Just be sure that if you have a gel battery that your charger is compatible:

I recently bought a 2004 R 1150 R. Can I also charge my battery through the accessory port?

Can anyone suggest a good charger for this?

Thanks

NVMIKE,
Yes, all R1150R bikes can be charged through the accessory port. Here's a charger that works for both gel and non-gel batteries: http://www.ascycles.com/detail.aspx?ID=1357
It includes the adapter and this one at A&S is a good price, as it's $85 + tax at the dealer. Battery Tender Plus works for AGM and lead-acid types (possibly gel), but you'd have to buy the adapter plug separately.

I like the Battery Tender. Works great, won't overcharge. It's $40 w/ free shipping here:

You can either hook up the supplied connector directly to the battery one time and leave it somewhere easy to get to (like under the front seat on top of the air filter) or go get yourself a BMW adapter for the accessory outlet. I've heard, but not confirmed, that John Deere uses the same "cigarette" style plugs as BMW.

When I bought my '02 it had been sitting for 6 months and the battery was almost dead. It would just barely light the dash lights.
I plugged in the battery tender overnight and it started right up the next morning.
