R1100R fuel tank capacity

Post by dj1100rt »

Near as I can tell our 99 R1100R tank capacity it about 4.6 US gallons. Is that your collective experience? That's about a gallon short of the BMW literature claims of that era.

It is a drag because my wife is looking for fuel at 120 miles with the fuel light already on and I am still sporting a half tank on my 2000 RT. I thought that the two bikes would be a little more "compatible" in that area.

My '96 fuel light goes on at around 120 mi. too. At approximately 40 mpg (city and highway riding) I feel comfortable taking it to 160, then I'm looking for gas, but I usually just refill at around 120.

I remember mine to be about a disappointing gallon less then advertised capacity with a range of about 170 miles before the light came on

With this tankful, I have switched to no-ethanol gas, and my warning light, which has always come on around 120 miles, has not yet come on at 143 miles... :) =D>

I can easily get 350 to 400km out of tank of petrol (21 liters / 5.46 US gallons).. the BMW estimate @ 100kph (60mph) is 4.6 liters per 100km..

Your estimates are saying you're getting only 200km out of tank..

What speeds do you guys ride at?

Hi,

BMW said that at a CONSTANT speed of 90 kph the consumption would be 4.5 liters/100 km. However that is an unrealistic consumption because I don't know of any rider running at a constant speed of 90 kph. If I am touring at normal speeds my consumption is around 5.5 l/100 km. If I squeeze her I'll be ending up with 6 or even 6.5 l/100 km. On the racetrack upto 7.5 l/100 km.

Now calculate for yourself.

I have a '97 with 25k miles, and I often ride it hard in the twisties. It has always given me at least 140 miles before the light comes on. Nor Cal using preium fuel

My 2010 R12R takes about 5.25 gallons (US) before the filler tube gets in the way. That much gas gets me 240 miles with about 20-25 miles left in the tank (about a 1/2 gallon (US)). The above assumes normal riding, not WFO but well above the posted speed limits.

cheers

Ok, so I'm very light on the throttle :D

90 is my average around here I would say, I prefer back roads instead of autoroute.. Even then, I only do 100kph (62mph) on the autoroute as the vibrations above 4000 rpm seem a bit worrying (maybe my ignorance at what the motor can actually do)

My fuel light comes on around 130 miles like clockwork. My 99' did also.

With my 2000 R11R the fuel light always comes on at 140 mi but the furthest I have gotten is about 165 before I chickened out and pulled over for gas and even then it took 4.1 gal to fill it to the top of the tank. One day I will carry an extra gallon with me and see how far it gets before sputtering to a stop; I've been saying that to myself for years but have never gotten around to it . . . Kinda like how many licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop. I don't mind, though, because I am usually looking for a stop every 150 miles or so to stretch my legs and give my rear a break. I go speed limit around town and try to lock the throttle at 80 when on the highway. Also, I always use regular unleaded - have not felt need to go with the higher grades and have noticed no pinging with my engine either. I average 40-44 mi/gal.

Filled up today, idiot light came on at 131 miles, I waited until 147 miles on the odometer. Filled the tank, and it took 3.9 gallons. Go figure.

My understanding is that the ABS hardware situated under the tank requires a 1 gallon smaller tank.

I've run out of gas 2 (or 3...) times. 185 miles and I'm pushing. Yes, I know it's not good for the fuel pump to run it dry.

I don't have ABS and as I said, I filled to the lip of the tank with 4.1 gal after a 165 mile run. I checked my notes and seems I had gone 170 miles one time between fillups but didn't note how much it took then. I'm guessing mine is the 4.6 gal tank.

My 00' R manual states it has 4.5 gallon tank, that is a gallon less than the specs I have seen on the internet.

Your engine is designed to run at 4,000 RPM plus. You'll find the bike much more responsive if you try to stay at 4,000 and above most of the time. It won't significantly affect fuel mileage, it may actually improve it.
The vibrations, if bad, may mean you need to synchronize the throttles.
If, on the other hand, the vibrations that worry you are felt in the handlebars, it's due to a resonant frequency in the bars at around 4,000 rpm and goes away at about 4,800 RPM. It's quite annoying though, and the permanent fix is to go to ManicSalamander.com, and buy their replacement, and much heavier, handlebar-end weights. this will move the resonant freuency up above the rev-limiter and completely cure the problem.

Man I thought I was getting some great mpgs before I had to push for a mile or so. Previous owner didnt mention a failed fuel light. Anybody actually managed to squeeze over 4 US into an empty tank? Have gone + 180 miles a few times running less than 60 mph but in the fast lane I think about 150 is it. Bike could really use another gear. GPS has a warning feature and I reset the trip odometer. Traced out the circuit and seems the sender may be faulty. Tank took a hit once.

I have gotten 180 out of tank at the absolute most when I was up in the mountains. Flat out on the interstate staying at 80 mph though, my dummy light comes on around 130 miles and I will get gas at the 160 mark with usually between 3.9 and 4.1 gallons. I have never run it out to see where the absolute limit is.
