Time to change the fork oil in my 1996n r850r. My manual shows "nothing" so could somebody give me a clue.
What weight oil and how much for each fork. I know how to drain the oil but I'm not sure how or where to add the new oil. Can I just remove the handle bars and take off the large nut and add the oil there! I have no leaks so I hope not to have take apart the fork seals.
I have goggled this topic with no results....thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

Not a lot of 850ers here... But maybe somebody will chime in.

Depending on the year of the R850R it will be identical, for the front fork business, to the R1100R or the R1150R.
I have the R850R which is identical to the R1100R for most purposes.
Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to the original question, but it should possibly have been posted to R1100R group.
I may well be wrong but, on my bike, the amount of oil in the front fork tubes seems to be non-critical, since the front suspension is controlled by the coil/shock unit.
How you get the oil in, sorry, dunno.

Not much info out there for the r850r. Too bad, It's a great bike and mine is going strong at 95,000 miles. I would love to see BMW bring back a mid size R bike. Bigger is not always better but the trend seems to be going that way. I also get great gas milage and these days that's important. Some of the bigger bikes get milage no better than a small car or even less. Not good!

Hi jacksgp.
Yeah, I totally love my R850R.
It's a 1998 model, and in all respects except engine internals, it's the same as an R1100R.
If your is about the same age, then posting to the R1100R group makes sense.
I dunno exactly what year the move was from R1100R to R1150R, but there was an R850R to "match" the R1150R as well.
Mine has 119 thousand kilometres on the clock, uses a bit under 5 litres of petrol per 100 kms. and, on the one occasion I had reason to open up the throttle seriously, it spun up to 8,000 rpm, in third gear, sweet as a nut!
AFAIK, the smaller engine business was originally for European countries, and particularly Euro-police forces.
In some other thread, it appears that BMW still make a "small" engine option of the R1200, a 900 cc, but only sell it to police and such like authorities.

Re: fork oil change r850r
problem solved...I posted this message in the r1150r site as suggested and was pleased to find out that this procedure is not required as long as you have no other issues ex. leaky seals. I'm good to go and brother I'm ready. Thanks!
Re: fork oil change r850r
When the seals go bad let me know. I have an old trick from my dirt-bike days.
