Paint protection

Post by Raven »

Hi all, have a 2004 rockster in black/copper. Prior to my purchase of bike 8 months ago it sat in someones garage unused and unloved for close on 6 years ( 750 miles on clock!). Have put a couple of thousand miles on the bike since then and absolutely love it.
There are the usual 1150 corrosion issues - bubbling of paint on forks and a couple of bolts in need of replacing.
Paint on fuel tank is not bad but have noticed some tiny pin prick style marks. Wondering if there is a product that will protect paint work whilst keeping the matt finish. Dont want to use regular polish as I reckon it will make the tank shiny.

Any ideas??

Not sure as I'm not all that fussy - a repaint might be in order - but with Matt paint that might not need specialist skill.

As an aside - congratulations on finding a bike with such low mileage!! I thought I'd done pretty well finding a bike that had done only 1,200 in 2 years!

Maybe its just me but with that particular colour it seems to show up the dirt and any minor imperfections very clearly. Probably being very picky and is something I will just learn to live with.
Yeah bike was owned by the son of a BMW car dealer who obviously didnt use it. Occasionally classified adds can come up with a gem every so often! With new oils, filters and plugs she is running like a dream.
Dont see many of them on them road in my neck of the woods (Dublin, Ireland).
The pull of the GS is still strong....

I hear you Raven. I suffered with GS envy for a very long time. Then BMW puts out the Triple Black, and I could no longer resist...

Anyway, back to your question. I remember seeing some conversation about this in years past, and found what appears to be the correct answer

Do an advanced search here, targeting the Rockster forum, on "wax", or "303 aerospace protectant" and you'll see some happy users. Maybe if I had used that product, I wouldn't be wondering what happened to my old friend. :(

Hey thanks, thats great, think I will give this a go. Rest of bike is acf50'd to within an inch of its life so why not something for bodywork as well.

Have not yet seen one of these Triple Black jobs in my local dealership. Great colour scheme but I think most importantly they have fitted the dohc engine.
On the rare occasion I leave my trusty steed into a BMW dealer I get to use a courtesy bike for a day or two - usually 1200 GS. Have had the 1150 variant in the past but the 12 is a world apart in terms of its engine character and feel. (Wonder will they give me a go of the new 1600??)

When me and the rockster fall out of love I think one of these will be on my wish list....
