Beakster Bash VIII; Details & Routes

Post by STDocLizard1 »

Well, we are one week out and things are coming to together.

Beakster Bash VIII Details:

The TriState Area provides a really terrific back drop of scenery, good roads, and an abundance of eateries. Three routes are posted for your riding pleasure. Transfer to GPS or copy and paste to get your directions in hand. These are only suggestions and you are welcome to make your own. There appear to be some locals in attendance and you may want to pick their brains as well.

Wildlife is abundant in the area. Deer and black bear are the largest local hazards. Last fall, a record Black Bear was taken in Milford that weighed in at 975 pounds. These are not the cute cuddly ones that you may be used to. Many times, local residents will pull over and let motorcycles pass; some will not. Be careful especially with slow moving vehicles as they may be looking to make that left turn without a signal. There is little Police presence except in the larger towns. This is true of all three states, but Park Rangers and the Sheriff can also issue a summons. Be careful on NY 97 through the Hawks Nest; there are multiple turnouts for photo ops, but the Deerpark Police patrol that area because of its high accident rate.

The Milford Bridge (NJ-Pa) charges to leave NJ, but not enter. The Bridge at Dingman's Ferry charges both ways. I have tried to amend the routes so you won’t have to pay except at Dingman’s.

The Motels are directly across the street from one another on US 6/ US 209. Regardless of your approach to Milford, you should use EXIT 46 off of Interstate 84 and come down into the center of town on US 6. This will avoid the hassle of the intersection of I 84, US 6, NJ 23 at Port Jervis. The traffic here can be a real bear especially at rush hour.

There are plenty of places to eat, but only two within walking distance. Balchs Restaurant is where we will have our Saturday Night Dinner. The Milford Diner is 0.6 miles if you are looking for breakfast. I am suggesting breakfast and dinner places for the other days. Lunch is on your own as you find it.

The highlight of this Bash in addition to the roads and camaraderie has got to be Bethel Woods which is the site of the Woodstock Festival in 1969. The grounds are gorgeous, the concert field is still intact, a plaque commemorates the performers, but the museum is a must see. The displays will take you on a journey from 1960 to 1969 with videos, memorabilia, and a concert experience in its theater. Please plan on going here if you do nothing else. It’s a trip worth the $15!

High Point State Park and its Monument is a nice side trip off of NJ 23. Phoenicia, NY is the turning point of the Catskill Mountain Route. Frequented by Babe Ruth, it remains a tourist destination for outdoor sports. If you stop for lunch, I would suggest Brios for some oven-fired pizza.

The Hawks Nest on NY 97 has some great views and plenty of pullouts for photo ops. Dingman's Ferry Bridge is the last privately owned toll bridge over the Delaware River (1836). The Roebling Aqueduct Bridge connecting NY and Pa spans the Delaware River at Lackawaxen is the oldest wire suspension bridge in existence. All of these are found on the same route as Woodstock.

I remember riding that area back when I was still working and lived in Easton PA. We always made subtle plans so there was no fuel stop in NY State ($$). BTW, The curves of the hawks nest are very very unforgiving. On one side there is a stone mountain where the sandy/grassy shoulder should be. On the other side a low stone wall and a very steep drop-off beyond it . . . . like the pic above shows.

Oh yeah . . . . remind me to bring my warm riding gear!! We will be in the mountains in the wilderness.
