problem setting valves

01 Rt1100, same engine as roadster.
I know the setting to use but I can't figure out where to stick feeler guage.
I've set valves all my life on all my cars, normally between rocker arm and valve stem.
On this bike there is a cone between rocker arm and valve stem.
Where the $%& do I stick the feeler guage to set them? There is no flat place i can see, even after watching youtube vid...
