A pistol grip shotgun is illegal in NJ.
You local gun retailer would know for sure, but anything that "looks" like an assault weapon is verboten.

And that Mossberg JIC is super cool.

Sopranos used those things and they live/lived in NJ. :? ;-)

Was not familiar with out repressive the NJ state gun laws are. Sorry. Maybe Christie can be lobbied otherwise?

An “assault firearm” also includes any semiautomatic shotgun with either a magazine capacity exceeding six rounds, a conspicuous pistol grip, or a folding stock; a semi-automatic rifle with a fixed magazine capacity exceeding 15 rounds; a part or combination of parts designed or intended to convert a firearm into an “assault firearm,” or any combination of parts from which an “assault firearm” may be readily assembled.
I didn't see a definition of "conspicuous"

Christie is fiscally conservative, but on other issues, he's more of a moderate.

The way I read that PDF puts you in the clear, the JIC is not simi-auto. NJ does sound pretty dark on guns though. Maybe I couldn't live there, I think I already own some stuff that's illegal there.

If money is a problem, look at alternative gun dealers. Stopped in a pawn shop while riding, my car, thru Georgia, in the middle of nowhere, and left with a Remington 1300 short barrel home defense 12 Ga. for 200.00-cash. He would only do the deal for cash.

THIS is NOT a good idea if one lives in NJ. Brian Aitken was sentenced to 7 years in prison for having a gun and ammo that was legal in Colorado, where he lived at the time of purchase, and the NJ police discovered it in the trunk of his car in NJ. His mother called 911, because she was "worried" about him. He consented to a search of his car thinking he was legal, and bang, 7 years in prison. (Bet she never calls 911 again unless there is a body laying in front of her.)

It took a huge grassroots effort by thousands to get Govenor Christie to pardon him, which he did last Christmas.
Reason magazine published an article about him while he was incarcerated.

This is a modern day horror story. (Filed under: I'm from the government, and I am here to help.)

Hard to beat the 870 Remington for its price and double slides. Plus 2 barrels will meet all your needs. I would not purchase a semi-auto for defense, and I love my Browning, just not against a bear or person. And no pistol grip for a 12, unless it is a pistol grip on a stock. Very important to shoulder the gun or use the stock for leverage against your side.

The Remington 870 has a pistol grip on a stock, such as this

I wonder if these are legal in NJ?

Otherwise, this seems like it would do the trick.

The 870 has such a distinct sound ... especially when its dark.

You also need to be careful not to wind up like these folks as follows:

Yeah, what was up with that dog ? He's supposed to distract the bear while the master goes for the 870.

My dog briefly engaged the black bear, then thought better of it, and ran inside to bark from inside the house. She's not Old Yeller, but she is very protective of us. I could tell another story of how she ran off a bad guy, but that's for another day.

Anyway, I did look at the Remington 870 express today -- this one

http://www.remington.com/products/firea ... 8inch.aspx

It's $400 at the local store, and I think Remington has a $30 rebate on it through year end. It will probably take that long to get the ID card in NJ!

You can't go wrong with that choice. The 870 is an icon.

By the way, the rifled slugs are expensive! It's around $6 for a box of 5.

For what you are wanting it for, I think that is a good choice, too.

I am certainly no black bear expert, but I've encountered a couple in my life (not hunting them). They are usually such a non-aggressive (although big and strong) animal. They spend their lives scrounging for food, not overpowering and killing other large animals, like humans. Keeping them away from the kids is a good plan, though. The sound of a 12 ga. alone would likely send him scurrying. Peppering him with shot should do it if the sound doesn't.

So, I might consider some lighter loads than stated above. This is in part because I have a love of animals. I wouldn't want him around my kids, but I wouldn't want to kill it if I didn't have to. I can foresee an awful slow death as a likely result of using slugs to scare a bear away. When hunting, you would (hopefully) take the time to make sure to get a clean kill, or take no shot at all. It's just something that I would consider with the kinds of loads I would have in the waiting.

So maybe consider keeping the first couple of shells loaded with lighter bird shot, then heavy shot, and if all that doesn't get him running... the last shot or two with a slug. You ought to think about that the gun you are looking at has a pretty short barrel. That means you will have a large spread with shot, but poor accuracy with a slug.

I guess my thinking would be the same for an intruder also. At close range, you will knock a person on their ass and bloody them up good, with pretty much any load.

I'd prefer to take the Dikk Cheney approach first, before escalating. ;)

That sounds like good advice.

I submitted my forms today for the firearms ID card. We'll see how long it takes -- I've read some horror stories about delays in NJ.
