R850R Cafe mod help

Post by ginscoe »

I posted about this 1996 R850R earlier this year, but was not able to get it home until yesterday.

https://picasaweb.google.com/BigBabyG/R850RProject#

I am looking for help finding examples of highly modified oilhead roadsters so that I can get some ideas, etc. I want to cut down the rear frame to make it a single seater, remove all of the plastic drivel and tuck the wires... I already have a 1996 R1100r and a R1200c that are factory-ish. I would like to make a custom bike and need some inspiration. I'll be glad to post pictures of my progress. I have some parts to trade and sell too. This bike came with a Givi rack - I think those are pretty rare these days. Anyway, thanks in advance for any and all help!

Hello ginscoe,

Good luck in your project, unfortunately I don't remember seeing so many R850R/R1100R cafe-racers on the web but I suggest making a search here and Google.

My first recommendation would be to get rid of the non-tubular handlebars, Wunderlich sells the adaptors and handlebars
http://www.wunderlichamerica.com
http://www.wunderlich.de/International/ (the german site have a more extensive online catalog)

Also on ebay you could get the adaptors. Just make a search for: tubular handlebar conversion adapters. and maybe also the 22mm tubular handlebars to suit your racing needs.

You could also get the fairing and seats from German makers like Wudo or Gimbel, you could find some parts on:
http://www.whaccessories.com/BMWAccessories.htm (they also have the handlebars kit)
http://www.wuedo.de

For the rest of the things you might need to get creative and chop the bike. In the Wudo gallery you could find some inspiration:

Please keep us updated.

Hi there,

oilhead cafe racers are unfortunately a rare breed. The airhead cafe racers are more common and may give you some sort of inspiration.

See http://flatracer.com/#/cafe-racers-gallery/4528954133 for example.

You may also have a look here http://www.technical-arts.de/index.php? ... y&catid=36

This is a German gentleman who has implemented oilhead and hexhead engines into the old airhead frames. Colossal work and a fine example for extreme dedication.

There are plenty of other possibilities. Like this guy has transplanted the tail of a Suzuki GSXR 750 K2 (http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/9046/p1000774lo5.jpg). Other people have transplanted the tail of a Buell ... You could also have a look at my mods and see if there is anything you'd like to implement (http://picasaweb.google.com/100340816935092240645)

Hello ginscoe,

It looks like you have the beginning of a wonderful project. I will be acquiring a '99 R1100R from auction very soon and intend to attempt a Cafe Racer direction on the bike. I've been a long time admirer of the Airhead conversions and appreciate the large amount of information on the internet on the subject. As others have said on this post, similar information for Oilheads is sparse. I think this will change in the future, as these bikes cycle back and folks like you attempt to work your magic. You are the proverbial guinea pig on this one, so please do keep us update on your progress and your ideas. I think these bikes have a lot of potential and really look cool once you remove the extraneous plastic, emblems, and such.

I've looked at a few of the mods omg1010 has done (he posted on this thread and has some other good threads on his bike) and really like the direction he has gone, so check his stuff out.

Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Best Regards,
-Kevin

You could also get some inspiration from this one viewtopic.php?f=2&t=24254

I know, its a 1150. But a great looking one!

Or you could get inspired by another German "inmate" https://picasaweb.google.com/1083981524 ... Sonderheft
This used to be an old R1100R. See what all he has done: https://picasaweb.google.com/1083981524 ... bauRodster

Sigi is a nice guy from Bavaria and he doesn't care about power. Only about the optics. Hence the engine is untouched.
