Water getting under gas cap and not draining from catch

'04 R1150R - Gas cap is leaking while washing the bike. water is getting down into flange around gas filler spout and not draining. Is there a dirty plugged up overfill line or does the drain off run into the gas tank?

The steel line runs through the inside of the fuel tank and exits out the fuel pump plate to an external drain. The problem is the steel piping is too small an ID and it easily gets plugged with damp dirt and rust. You need to feed in a 2 foot length of wire to poke it out. Patience is required if it is plugged up. Once the wire goes through, pipette spray it out with a carb cleaner spray, then compressed air. Of course, the line should be correctly connected and the contaminates should exit through the drain tube that exits behind the right footpeg.

I hadn't taken the time to look up the gas tank detail on any BMW dealer sites and figured someone had performed a fix. Too small id drain tube, somewhat typical but cie la vie. Worse things could be going on with the moto.....

Confirming my experience that its a blockage of the steel brake line.

With a syringe, I carefully dripped some penetrating oil into the drain hole and watched the exit tubes below. Saw a hint of discharge and then blew the works out with air compressor, now all is well...

Does the R1200 gasket solution from the BMW sportbike work for the R1150R?

Ran into the problem when I took delivery of my '04 R1150R 3 weeks ago.

Using weedwacker trimming line to unblock the drainage pipe and now it works fine.

Use a leaf blower or an air compressor line powered blow gun to remove any trapped standing rain/wash water around the closed cap BEFORE you open the gas cap, or that water will spill into the tank. Since riding in the rain and gassing up is a regular occurrence for most riders, it is very important that the water drain hole at the 9 O'Clock position is free-n-clear all the time! Rider ekyang's weedwacker trimmer line cleaning procedure is a great idea and much more flexible than using less flexible and less forcibly clearing, smaller diameter metal wire.

I thought the water/fuel overflow drain was the rectangular slot- if not what function does it serve?

So the round hole is not a tank breather- never cleaned mine out.

Mine closed up due to rust a few years ago. A brief reaming with mechanics wire and an occasional spray with WD-40 as well as occasional intentional over spray with gasoline has kept it open ever since.

My sons helped me give the bike its first bath last weekend...then went and gassed up... glub glub glub..... water poured into the tank...ANd this thread title popped into my head....

anyways, thanks for previous responses. will take care of this in short order.

Bought an 04 R1150R in June, and it had the water not draining problem. It's not fun watching water run into the tank at a fill up, and not fun watching the rust form. Tried clearing the tube with wire, string trimmer line, compressed air, various cleaning liquids. No luck. Pulled the gas tank, but before I removed the vent hoses from the tank, I traced them. And they were reversed at a pair of tubing connectors just above the foot peg. Reconnected the right way, everything back together and it's all good.

Thanks for all the suggestions; they worked! First, I located where the drain was. It didn't even show itself. Next, I carefully rammed wire and alternated with WD-40 / 3 in 1 oil. I let the oil work overnight until The oil did its thing, and the blockage was flushed out.
