What are those big brass screws really for?

Post by College »

I thought the big brass screws on the throttle bodies were to adjust the idle?

My 2003 rockster was serviced about 6 months ago and was running fine. I used it last week and noticed that the idle had dropped to about 700 rpm. Before I put it away in the garage turned both BBS's outwards to give an idle of 1000 rpm and did not think anything more about it. A week later came to use the bike and had areal problem getting it started. An hour later with battery going flat eventually got it going by jump start off the lawn mower. Seemed to run ok but tricky to start even when hot and again impossible when cold a day or so later. Being a bit thick did not think to reset BBS's to original setting.

Have now screwed them back in and starts better but wont tick over so have to put the "choke" on when in traffic to keep idle up.

Noticed on a long run that fuel consumption seems to be much better but may be my imagination.

Two questions:

Will I be drummed out of the forum for being a twerp?

And presumably there is something else amiss?

1) - Possibly - unless you follow the forthcoming suggestions.

2) hmm - possibly a bad set of plugs/coil-caps.

I would suggest you look up all the 'Throttle body setup'/'thottle body sync' threads you can find, make yourself a manometer and go do the decent thing. ;)
Non quod, sed quomodo.
