Best Garmin for your moto

Post by DanH »

Curious as to which Garmins you all are using and why. I need to be able to load a large Mexican map file, so the model must have sufficient capacity for that. Also, it should be able to handle the vibration of the bike and rough roads while riding.

Looking at a Nuvi 50LM, very reasonable cost, will that work?

Thanks!

Moto-Garmin?
I'm still using my old Zumo 550, (end of life) with a 16GB SD card.
The map is split, one part internal the rest on the SD.
Some Zumo 550 users put the whole map on the SD.

To buy second hand, Zumo 660, it has a micro SD to enlarge the capacity.

New, Zumo 350, 390, 590.... read the specs.

I heard the working of the 590 with routes is a bit differen than the 550.
Maybe I'll buy a Zumo 590LM in Februari.

BTW all the Zumo's are intended for motorcyle-use, they should be able to withstand the weather (rain, hail, snow)
As far as I know are the Nuvi's not watertight.

Old school Garmin 2730 (StreetPilot with XM via GXM30). Still works fine on the bike, happily waterproof and gloves-on operable. My XM subscription adds weather and traffic, which helps out in the no-cell-signal wilderness.

For backup, I bought the Garmin app for iPhone, which rocks most Nuvi performance features like lane selection, destination street photo, and standalone (without cell data) map & POI storage on the phone.
