Any problems with headers discolouring?

Post by trickytree »

I've got THIS R1200R on a list of possibles to go and look at.
Hard to tell from the photos but the headers look excessively discoloured to me, first though was its run a bit to hot although it supposedly has a fully stamped service book. Any more experienced 1200 owners out there have any words of wisdom or warning?
Cheers.

They do that if they get grungy and are not regularly cleaned. Doesn't affect function, but can look bad.

The header assembly is a single piece, headers and cat all the way back to the muffler connection. A new one is something like $1800 in the US. I got tired of looking at the badly-corroded ones on my bought-used '07, and eventually found a used but much more attractive one at a US breakers.

I guess this is a case when "They all do that" is true. I have the chrome ones and they turned an even color although I can't say what the color is. I have an old Beemer and had the exhaust ceramic coated black, I'm happy with the results and it only cost a little over $125 for a two into one system. Turn around time was a week although I did it in the summer when they were slow.

Not a good shot of exhaust but best I have:
