How high of an RPM range do you ride at?

Post by MThomas »

The R1150r is the only bike I've ever owned. I know all cars are different, e.g. my 944 would thrive between 4500 and the red line while my A4 would grumble as the RPMs grew above 4000. I tend to ride between 3500-4500 on the R1150r, what range do you ride in?

my bike has a happy spot around 4200-4400. where the vibes are low. and the speed is high. MPG if i stay steady at that speed was 44mpg. this jsut got even better since I did the throttle body sync last week!

there was one trip where I was kept below that, western michigan. speed around 70mph. 3700ish rpm. the mpg was 47mpg.

3000rpm plus when cruising. When accelerating gently I run up to 4000rpm and change gear. If I am overtaking then maybe 5000rpm before changing up. Occasionally I've hit the rev limiter when I was overtaking and watching the traffic. Sometimes I trickle along at 2000rpm in slow traffic.

Probably 3000+ on average. Cruising at 70 in 6th it's just under 3500. Did a 200 mile loop yesterday into WV and got 55mpg. I get into it hard occasionally but generally I'm relaxed.

To digress a bit, the higher I wait to shift, the smoother it is. 1st to 2nd, 5k, I barely touch the clutch and it just slips so nicely into 2nd. Above 2nd ussually about 4k or so. Riding, like most folks, no less than 3k(ish). She doesn't like doggin at 2k, but she will. Love this bike!

Just been out for a pleasant ride to Sherwood Forest in 23C. The speeds limits are low for most of the way and I spent much of my time watching the speedometer and blind corners and pedestrians and other traffic, rather than the rev counter. In an expected stop start scenario, 2000 rpm in third is fine. And hey I can admire the 16th century Bolsover Castle as well.
Later on yes, 3000rpm plus while cruising and watching the ever rotating 30,40,50 and 60mph speed limits. I found a sweet spot in one gear at ~5000rpm at 100mph. On a private road. The UK gearing is a bit lower that yours with 3000rpm in 6th showing 55mph. And 3800rpm showing 70mph.
Both smoothly. I accidentally got to 7500rpm in 4th in some twisties and it was still smooth.
A nice little excursion to make me think about the gearing.
Oh, my engine oil has topped itself up.

Just cruising around, between 3 and 4K, trying not to lug the engine. On a nice twisty mountain road, it seldom gets below 4,000, getting close to redline often. Between the torque and engine braking, you can ride for miles without hitting the gear shift or the brake! :) That's fun riding!

I run mine pretty hot. I'm averaging around 4500-5000k out in the twisties and open roads and 3500-4000k in the city and in SoCal traffic.

Now Vann........are you talking about what you ride now or what you used to ride?

There's a wee bit of difference..............cause I know what you're on now!

Wayne - pretty much the same for both! :D

Although, honestly, the new ride is smoother, once I got used to it.
