Final Drive Additive?

Post by towerworker »

My R has near 90K. I've been running Guard Dog Moly in the final drive since probably 20K. Of course they shuttered their doors in 2016. Wondering if any of you have run that or a similar product in your FD. Since they're not around I'm looking for a replacement. Any suggestions?

Better not give your email away in a public forum. You get a lot of spam, and fishing mails.

Good point. My email provider is pretty good at weeding the stuff out but you never know. I fixed it.

Does anyone use moly in their transmissions? My trans has always been a bit clunky and was wondering if adding moly would smooth it out...

In a word...NO.
Getrag "clunking in everything from motos to giant trucks for 100years" inherent to the brand. Only surpassed by Harley clunkers!

About the only thing that would "quiet" a getrag is saw dust or bananas.

Getrags are very tough.

All jokes aside, moly will not make any difference,(noise wise), its actually not good for some bearings as its too slippery. Use too much moly on "high speed" roller bearings and it can cause them to "skid" due to low friction which can be not so pretty good. (just so you know). So what is high speed? Well the rear drive main bearing is a tapered roller, it might be considered a high speed? (I would).

That's probably why BMW does not specify a moly additive.

Having said that...allot of folks do it anyway and..have no trouble??? But many figure that the more slippery the better.?! (Much depends on how much moly you put in)

I have never run an additive in either the transmission or rear drive....250K miles and counting. (dino)

However its a personal choice I guess. Many have used w/o undue effects.???

The SAE in me says no.

i watched chris harris put the same synthetic lube in the trans and the rear

75/130 i think. something like that

then i read AFTER MY REAR BEARING FAILED, that you should use 75 90 in the diff. i will always wonder if using the trans weight lube in the diff had anything to do with the failure. likely not, but the thought will always be there.

any way. what is your take, and what have you been using.

btw. got about 4 more mpg since replacing the rear bearing, so that says it's been on the way out for some time. likely since i have owned the bike
