Clutch replacement

Post by swamper »

Our project R1150R bike has come out very nice. Wish I could figure out the picture thing here. Still not sure how much further we want to take it.
Anyway we are looking at another R1150R for another project. It clutch needs replacement says the current owner. Anyone done the clutch replacement and have an idea to the cost involved, I think we can do the job/labor just need the new parts.

Just wondering: symptoms of bad clutch, or of bad clutch splines?

I'll need to visually inspect but the seller is saying a BMW dealer has told him it needs a clutch plate replacement. At 75,000 miles and no clutch could be a number of things going out. These bikes have little value in this type of condition.

So while I do some minor up-keep on my Beakster: valve adjust, throttle bodies, brakes, etc. I thought about doing my own clutch when it was needed.

I went through many repair videos and talked with a few BMW mechanics considering doing the project with video assist. I wanted to try it on my own.

However, after much deliberation I decided to have it done by local dealer.

Advice-before I agreed to have them do it, I got them to agree to let me have the parts sourced by Beemer Boneyard. Saved me about $450!

Including parts & labor, my total was about $1,100.

While I love tinkering, I'd hate to get completed and something was wrong and I was not able to ride for a month until I figured it out.

I think that total cost is a very good deal and knowing that you are getting a clutch plate with the extended splines.
