2004 R1150R Normal oil consumption

Post by Mrclubike »

I just bought a 2004 R1150R and it has burned over a qt of oil in 900 miles is this really normal !! ](*,)
I read in the GSpot FAQ that this is normal
If this is so I should be happy at 1liter per 900miles
Is there a trick to slowing this down
Not to start the dreaded oil thread but do different oils do better than others
Crap how often to we have to pull the heads and de coke this stupid thing
And i thought the air heads were bad at a 1/2 qt per 5000 miles

From your post on ADV.
They do use oil. I just bought a couple more 1150's that hadn't been used for awhile, actually a long time. The first 1-2,000 miles since restart they used a lot of oil but have seemed to settle down to about 1/2 qt/ 1000. One that we have put 4,000 miles on is at about 1/4 qt./ 1000, about the same as my 2004 which I've been using for the last few years. So I think the usual usage on these is around 1/2 Qt every 2,500 miles, others may have a different opinion but that's mine based off of five bikes.

It's an air cooled engine with 515cc cylinders and pistons, using a very, very hard cylinder liner for longevity.
The upshot is that the engineering tolerances are quite "open", and the cylinder and rings don't "bed in" as quickly as some other engines.
Think of it more as maintaining a constant supply of fresh oil.... :)

I was a bit skeptical on the mileage when i bought it
It only shows 8900 miles on the ODO
So between the fuel tank being trashed and the oil consumption maybe the mileage is accurate

The R1150R I just sold drank oil up to 20k miles, then it slowed down a lot.
This bike has obviously been babied in it's use.
Be sure to try and use the entire power band when you ride it, as it appears it's not fully broken in.

The top mark on the site window to the bottom mark is a half quart. Like many have said parking it on the side stand for any long lengths of time will add to oil consumption, smoke on start up. Make sure not to over fill. I know a lot of guys keep their level in the middle of the site window saying they seem to use more oil when its completely full, I haven't found this to be a factor with ours. The mileage on yours could be the rings really haven't been broken in all the way yet. It sometimes takes upward of 15-20K, keep putting on the miles and vary your RPM's. Good Luck, ride safe.

My Rockster2 uses oil - likely the result of an easy former life. It needs the CycleRob full throttle Nikasil piston ring seating treatment, which I'm trying to apply whenever road conditions and law enforcement proximity allow.

My 2002 uses a quart about every 1600 miles, and has since I bought it new. It’s now closing on 60,000 miles. I just add a cup about every 400 miles to keep the level between bottom of the circle and the midpoint dot. It’s so easy to check and add oil on these bikes that I really don’t consider it an issue.

My '04 has 100K and uses maybe 8-10 oz every 4,000 miles or so. It has not been babied. As others have pointed out yours is yet to be broken in.
Ride it like you stole it.

My Rockster still not using much or just as important "blowing" oil into the airbox which I drain every oil change. Usually just a drop or two is in there.
CA to WV and back, hard running in some sections...'bout 1/2 qt in 6200 miles.
