2002 R1150R Bumble Bee?

Post by kevco »

I have a yellow and black (striped) 2002 R1150RA.
How do I confirm that it is a "Bumble Bee" version?
I have read that there were only 200 or so made that year.

Thanks, Kevin

BMW did not specify any particular special edition or numbered series for that sub-model. It was offered between mid-2002 and early 2003 as a 2002 model, then the paint scheme idea morphed into the Rockster and later the Dark/Dark Ferro version. There are no special characteristics of the version - same mechanicals and electronics. I believe all the U.S. models were ABS and heated grips. The VIN and the paint code are your only means to verify original stock appearances. By the way, we tended to refer to that model as the Yellow Jacket rather than the Bumble Bee.

Only 200 ???? I have seen another one at the dealer, but something seems "off" about it. I have never seen another one on the road. Here's mineImage

I also have a Yellow Jacket. 2002 R1150R - S

What does the "S" mean? As far as I know, it is the only indication that the bike is a Yellow Jacket Special Edition. The "S" is noted on my pink slip. Other than that, it's just another R with heated grips and ABS.

A salesperson at A&S BMW told me there was only 50 Special Edition Yellow Jackests imported into the USA. I don't know how accurate that claim is since I have no way of verifying it.

At any rate, my bike looks exactly like yours except I replaced my OEM rack/luggage system with a SHAD rack/luggage system.

I'll have the OEM rack/luggage system and other items posted for sale ASAP.

Looks like the same factory screen that came on mine. I took mine off last season and have yet to miss it.

Not sure why the right edge of my pic gets cut off.

I'm new at this forum, so please give me a little latitude!

Anyway, so I've noticed that my bike's paint scheme seems to be a little on the rare side. I was hoping that you could help me narrow this down, as I have been told that this is a "Rockster" and conversely that it is not. It is titled as a 2003 R1150R. I know that the manufacture date was prior to October 2003, as the original owner took delivery in that month.

It is definitely a "single spark" model, and it is my understanding that some models sold in 2003 were "double spark".

There is "R1150R" in red lettered stenciling on the top of the tank and on the right and left rear ferrings.

Anyone have any clues? Thanks!

p.s. Mine looks exactly like the one above in the picture!

Also, trying to figure out how to post a picture of my bike....but it doesn't seem to be that intuitive. My apologies...

I could be wrong, but I do believe that it is a R1150R Roadster. This bike was the inspiration for the Rockster that has the different dual offset headlights. This also has the "beak" that the Rockster doesn't have. I think your stencil tells you the answer. I don't know how rare they are. I see one every now and then and when I see one for sale, they always seem to be priced reasonable in the price bracket of a roadster.
You may want to do a search on how to post a picture....but I do know you have to use an online site to post your pictures first like Photobucket. You cannot post them from your computer.

Mine is a dual spark, citrus green, double headlight, Rockster, manufactured in 03/2003, but mine is titled an 04. The yellow R1150 that you have turned me on to going back to an "R" bike, but when they came out with the green, I lusted after that. The color turned the wife ON, and she talked me into trading in the K1100 we had at the time. Still like the yellow though.

I have one in my garage.....never saw another on the road. Mine is a 2003, single spark. Wave if you see it in Chicago's western burbs....26K and still buzzing.

Is there anywhere I can purchase the side panel decals for my 2002 R1150R Dakar / Ferro bike?

I would check with your dealer. At one point I asked my dealer about Rockster stripes and they said they could get them.

Max's on line parts catalog shows some stickers are available. Not sure which color is the right one. Also, not inexpensive! $100 each side for the tank stickers.

Is this something a vinyl sign maker could do?
