Another broken leg
Wednesday morning on my way to work at 7:30. Pulling out onto a busy road just like I've literally done hundreds of times. There was one small patch of fine gravel that I'd earlier seen many times (and made a mental note to avoid). Of all the clean areas of asphalt I could've hit I manage to miss the good stuff and hit the bad. I'm under 5 mph but at throttle so as to pull onto a 55 mph highway. Just enough to break the back tire loose. Down we go. I come to a quick stop with near 700 lbs of bike on my right leg. The immediate pain tells me this is more than a sprain or bruise. I reach over and switch off ignition (was still idling). I pull my right leg out from under the bike. My right foot is laying over 90°to the right. Hmm......something wrong with this picture.
First one to stop is a deputy....he does all the right stuff (as did everyone that stopped). Nurse in ER said "you've got the prettiest and most perfect two spiral fractures I've ever seen".
I'd have rather she said I had the prettiest eyes she'd ever seen. Darn.
Didn't hurt the bike hardly at all.

Hang in there. Speedy recovery. One of the few uncontrollable factors - gravel on the road!!

It's always the closer to home ones that get you!

Re: Another broken leg
Wow....Here in Colorado there's much more gravel than I encountered back east - went down a few times before I figured that out. Bad luck and you seem like such a nice guy. I know that's your forum personality; it's very possible that in real life you're difficult. At least a clean break is said to end up good as new. Heal fast and catch up on your reading.

Dang! I hate to hear that!
I hope for a complete and speedy recovery.

You nailed it Bogdan. Wayne once chewed out a lady for crossing the street too slowly. Poor old woman just needed new bearings in her walker. He also yelled at a kid one time for almost hitting him with a model airplane. It was one of those little balsa wood, rubber band wind-up models...and the kid was probably already graduated from kindergarten...but still.Bogdan wrote-"...and you seem like such a nice guy. I go this afternoon to get this temporary splint removed and replaced with a cast. I understand they offer colors now. Kinda wondering if I should jazz it up a bit??

How many times have you broken your leg
This is #2.
Interesting in that I broke the left leg in a similar but opposite turn. Was turning left out of the office parking lot in January '08, hit a very small bit of ice and back end of bike slid to my right. Broke left leg in two places below the knee, a compound fracture that required a rod from knee to ankle. This was a right turn from stopped, hit very small gravel and went down. Two breaks but thankfully not compound.
Broke fibula and tibia in both legs. Hopefully this is is for a long time.

Oh Wayne, sorry to hear about this.
Need to work on your timing to better coincide with pandemics and riding season.
Where do we send the antifreeze for your cast?

Re: Another broken leg
Vann at this point I'm not planning to come. I hate that but sitting around in a cast and crutches is not much fun. Setting up a tent and all the stuff that goes with it is just too much work. If I was in a walking cast that would make some difference but I'm not to put any weight on my leg for some time as both bones were completely severed. The bones laid back together well and so the hope is I'll be very careful with it and no surgery will be needed. (No metal rods)wncbmw wrote:Crap Wayne, sorry to hear that!
