Preventive Maintenance

Got a good laugh today. Friend of mine at work called and told me he spent $794.13 so his car would pass the emission test required here in Houston. Said car is a 98 Ford Explorer with 138K on the odo. Find out he has never had a tune up and the check engine light that was on for SEVERAL thousand miles was off prior to the emission test. Of course, 3 oxygen sensors were changed BUT.......when he told me the mechanic said he could have gapped the old plugs with a 50 cent piece, I had to laugh. Plug wires had holes in them too. Suprised it didn't miss any, I've ridden to lunch with him a few times and it seemed to run OK. I told him to do a google search on preventive maintenance.
