Power Mods for R1150R?

Post by MMH »

Stock power is 85 hp. Are there any relatively cheap power mods? Comparing to a R1200R and it has 109 (29% more) even though the displacement only increased by 4%.

Start with a cat. replacement Y pipe, and a high performance can. I heard the best/only way to get a lot more is to change the cams. I wish I knew where to find said cams. :smt075

Mods I heard of for a R1150GS which was SERIOUSLY fast were :

K1200LT fuel regulator (1/2psi more than stock)
R1150RT cam
R1150RT air manifolds
Laser CCP
Y-piece & can.

Think there was a couple of other things, but can't remember what they were.

The R1150GS is virtually the same engine as the R/Rockster.

Increase compression ratio, find a way to advance the timing, and run aviation fuel (130 octane). That will of course ruin the cat (tetra-ethyl lead) so make sure you remove that.

Claimed horsepower is 85, but on a dyno most 1150R's come in at about 77+-.

Shortly after I got mine, I put on a Laser y-pipe, bbPower FI chip, M-tec airbox inlet (50% larger area than stock) and RS inlet manifolds.

After the mods I put the bike on a dyno and got 83hp at the rear wheel. Not bad considering no engine internals were changed.

This morning I stripped all that stuff off since the dealer told me my F800ST will arrive in a week or so and they want the 1150R in stock form when it's traded in. The F800's are coming in with a genuine 85hp at the rear wheel, but the wet weight is a hundred pounds lighter than the 1150R. Can't wait.

I think that rating was at the crank, there is some loss getting to the ground.

Nice move - I like the F800 bikes, and see them as at least faster than the 1150R, but I'm not ready to give up my bike yet.

As for the power mods - there was another member on this board (Boxermania) that did a lot of mods to his 1150R. He did a lot of intake/exhause mods: replaced the cat/muffler, removed the airbox and replaced with filter pods, replaced the fuel regulator, replaced the injectors, re-programmed the fuel injection mapping. I'm not sure if he changed the cams, but after all of that he still didn't turn it into a superbike.
