Re: L'Beakster Bash May 2008 Figure Eight Loop

This loop will provide a variety of roads to stretch your legs on. The two sprints on the Interstate Highway yield quick legs to avoid congestion in the cities and get you to the better parts of route. Lunch is where you find it. A Squid watch is in effect on the lower part of PA 339 just north of Mahonoy City.

Re: L'Beakster Bash May 2008 The Keyhole Loop

Post by STDocLizard1 »

This is a long day with lots of saddle time. It is not for everyone. I included it as an option, because I would be remiss if you were not afforded the opportunity to ride through the State Forests west of Williamsport. Getting there is only half the fun. The section from Jericho(PA 120) down Wycoff Run Rd onto Quehanna Highway is great, but coming back up on PA 144 to Renovo and the short hop on Hyner Run Rd is "just the berries." Ride hard, enjoy the scenery, but watch out for the wildlife. Lunch is where you find it. Don't wait to refuel.

You can always copy-n-paste 'em into Word -- or even Notepad.

(THere's a lot of incompatible versions of Word out there.)

That's what I would expect most people will do. The directions may be overly simplistic, but you may modify them to the format that you use the most. if there are any questions or mistakes, please post up. There is plenty of time to get ready for the Bash, plan your day trips, and acquaint yourself with the general area prior to your arrival.

I rode through Renovo last fall, it was the only place I've ever been to with gas pumps right on the curb of the sidewalk.
Image
It seemed to be such a desolate location (for PA) that the town almost gave me the creeps. The guy at the gas station was very nice and very friendly, but it was freakish to be in a town 30 or 40 miles from any other town with 3 gas stations but only one open (it was the only one with gas; the first time I stopped he said the other two might have hi-test and pointed to their location , neither of them had any gas at all).
Image

The roads to / from however, were awesome. I literally only saw maybe 5 or 6 cars for a total of 2-3 hours, except for the 20 minutes or so that we were in Renovo. We were there on a Wednesday, so I'm sure that made a difference. I took this picture just to show how curvy the roads were, not so many hairpins, but virtually no straight spots at all.
Image

MLW & I are really looking forward to the Bash. We spent the night in Wellsville and went to the PA Grand Canyon and were pretty disappointed; not in the roads but in the anti-climatic reality of a river running through a valley with a sign saying "...Grand Canyon of...".

Quaint ain't it?

As I mentioned, don't wait to refuel. Did any of the locals tell you that they thought they saw a "sickle" like yours in a picture book once?

That's the beauty of the Keystone State.

It's the journey and not necessarily the destination that makes it memorable.

This isn't too far from Benton; recognize it?
Image

That's right, the famous town with coal mine burning under it;
Image

There is a pretty interesting tour of coal mine a few miles from Centraila; nice and cool inside there on a hot day.
Image

This man is within 50 or 60 miles of Benton also, has a great collection of motorcycles (including a Japanese knockoff of of Boxer).
I don't know if this is the same model as the one used by Rollie Free, but the pipes were still warm from the man in the picture having just taken it for a ride.
Image

He was undoubtedly the most interesting biker I have ever met. His wife (25+ years younger than him) showed me a bike he was taking to a vintage race at Barbers later that month ("...vintage bikes, not vintage riders, but I guess for him it'll be both..." she said).
Image

When I'm his age (75 or 78) I hope to have one of these in my garage.
Image

There really is a lot of interesting stuff in PA.

Am I the only one jonesing for the Bash?
I haven't been out this year yet due to dead battery, bad weather & unfinished home renovation project.
MLW keeps asking me what people do at a Bash.
Since I've never been to one I am tell her it's just my guess, but I suspect that people come to the meeting place, ogle bikes for a little while, ride, eat & ogle, ride some more, eat & ogle again, ride back to a place to sleep & eat, drink, ogle & BS until its too late and repeat it the next day.
Are there any steps that I am missing?

By way of introduction, this is MLW & I;

You got the idea with the exception of seeing old friends and making new ones. The ride part is about some fantastic ribbons of roadway where you can shred some asphalt and carve some curves. Oh..................................and there is this thing about the new guy buying really expensive imported beer for the veteran "Beaksters." :^o

There may be a room opening up. I tore up my shoulder playing hockey last week and the Dr thinks my rotator cuff is toasted. So surgery is a possibility. That would take me out of the bash. I will let you know when the room is canceled. I really wanted to meet everyone that I had not already met at the previous bash/rally. Oh, and those that did not want to meet me.
