Oil burning

Post by Tundra Dweller »

While on a multi-day ride I noticed a decent plume of oil smoke when starting the 1150.
I understand you do not want to leave it on the side stand for extended periods. Odd thing is it would do this after just going into a store and not after sitting all night at a Campground.
Occasionally there would be a noticeable, loud “clack” sound at initial turnover. Not sure if they are related. Valves were set by a Dealer 5000 miles ago, 11,111 miles currently.

A little bit of oil will often seep past the valves and into the cylinder when the engine is shut down and immediately put on the side stand. Doesn't always happen because it depends on the position of the left piston, valves etc. If I think of it I shut the engine off and hold the bike upright for a few moments before I set it over on the stand. Seems to help. It will make quite the cloud when it does smoke however! But it's normal, they all do it. I'm on my 3rd R bike and they've all done it.

Thanks for the heads up. I won't worry about then. It uses enough oil as it is !
I need to come up with a center stand bumper as the "breadbox" is gone.
I put the CS back on when I park it in the Garage.

Have to admit I've never noticed mine do anything like that, but like Towerworker says, it's not a major issue.

Good point. The air box drain was dry.
I typically don’t run the oil level to the top of the sight glass. More like 1/2 to 3/4.

I'd forgotten about the air box drain. I could stand to check mine although I've not ridden since before Chrismas of last year.
