I have been thinking of swapping out my final drive for one with a lower ratio for some time and finally got the nerve and time to do it. I got a 32:11 at a good price and in good condition. A bit of tidying up (repaint etc) a new seal and O-ring and it was ready to go.
Yowsers!!!!! Why didn't I do this years ago. In top I need an extra 150 rpm to achieve 100km/h, not an issue. In gears 1 - 4 the difference is wonderful. The bike isn't on it's hind legs but it feels MUCH peppier. If I am out "sport " riding it's twisties in the mountains where I live. Everything is up and down in the first four gears (maybe fifth) but the extra go in this range is incredibly useful and right where I need it.
Not hard to do and no drawback that I can't live with. Much recommended.

Re: Changed the final drive
Is your bike an R1150R or a Rockster?
I can't remember offhand which final drive ratio the Rockster has, don't know if it's different from the R-R or not.
What bike was the new FD from?

Re: Changed the final drive
Rockster is 31/11 (2,82)
R1100S is 33/12 (2,75
R1150r is 31/11
R1150RT 32/11
Less than 3% difference.
Does show up in 6th gear roll ons w/the bit lower ratio but on a track day un- noticeable. A little more top speed at the rev limit with the 2.82.

Re: Changed the final drive
The drive came from an RT (a tad less likely to have been flogged.)

Re: Changed the final drive
Interesting - the Rockster has a different top gear* (6th) than the R-R so it will rev-out in top, where the R-R won't.
I didn't know they had the same FD ratios, but it doesn't surprise me.
* from what i've heard - its the same top-gear as the R1150GS-Adventure.
