Low fuel warning light/bike reaction

Post by DRothermel »

Not sure if any of you have experienced this or not, but I thought I'd share it with ya'll. Twice over the past four days I've run the bike into the low fuel warning light. The computer showed both times, 30 miles remaining. Within about 5-7 miles after the light came on and both times while riding up a grade on the freeway, the bike started to sputter and act like it was running out of gas. On both occasions when I reached level pavement it continued to run fine. Both times I was able to gas by the time the computer showed around 20 miles. Running on the level during this situation, the bike ran just fine. I am guessing that the fuel pump may be in the forward area of the tank and when riding up an incline it starts to starve itself. Both times when I fueled it took 5.1 gallons, both times filled on the sidestand and both times just below the top of the neck. Just FYI for yoos guys!

I had the same experience while commuting to work on a level freeway. when the bike started lugging as if it were out of fuel. The computer showed 18 miles to empty. After putting on the hazards and moving to the right through five lanes of traffic, the engine started running right again. At the gas station, I put 4.9 gallons of fuel in while on the center stand.

This happened just before my 600 mile service, and when I took it in for the service, the tech said he couldn't find anything wrong.

I'll plan on filling up well before the computer says 18 miles to go.
