Matt,

for the simple reason that spoke wheels are a pain to clean. Moreover I wanted to have the wheels in the the color of the bike. That is why I chose the the 5-spoke cast wheel. And also because I found a very goo instruction how tho adapt the 5-spoke cast wheels to my R1100R.

I am not a fan of spoke wheels - except on my mountain bike ... :D

Kind regards

My pleasure. And I have learned something new. I believe my English is reasonably well but the word "candor" was new to me. It's a proof that we never stop learning - and I learn with pleasure.

Oliver,
Nice looking bike mate =D>
I see some of the various mods on your R1100R and am interested in how you did them.
Couple of questions if you don't mind me asking.
Wheels : How did you modify the bike to fit the R1150R front and, more importanly, swap the 18" for the 17" rear wheel..was there a FD change involved for the gearing?

Front Telelever : Is the R1150R Lower pivot assembly a straight replacement for the R1100R?
Were you able to use the 1100 shock or needed the 1150 shock? What modifications were needed?

I like the look of your front oil cooler...very neat.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Phil,

regarding the R1150 a-arm (commonly known as telelever)
nothing needs to be changed or modified. The R1100R front shock fits as well as the a-arm itself. The R1100R and the R1150R shar exactly the same geometry. However with the a-arm you also need the axle (you can't use the axle of the r1100r a-arm!). By axle I mean the one which connects the a-arm to the engine block. Loosening the screw of the front ball-joint is a pain because this screw is "glued" with high-tension Loctite and you need to heat the fastening to about 200° celsius to be able to unscrew ... So for the front ball joint you need a heat-gun, an Allan key (I think it was 9 mm) and an offset ring wrench (I think it was 22 or 26 mm). A torque wrench is also compulsory for the whole excercise.

What is not possible to re-use is the steering damper as the R1150R a-arm has no mountpoint (as the R1150R has no steering damper at all!). But riding without the steering damper has never ever been a problem and as a matter of fact steering is easier and there are no drawbacks in my opinion. Again as the 1150 and the 1100 share exactly the same geometry and since the 1150 did not have a steering damper I believe BWM also felt is was not necessary any more.

regarding the wheels
The K1200RS (the flying brick and not the new 4-cylinder!) rear wheel (5") fits the r1100r without any modification! Just plug-on! The front wheel is a different story. You need the wheel of the R1150R (not the one off a Rockster!), the ABS ring of the old R1100S, and new disc rotors dia 305 mm (either the rotors of the old R1100S or some aftermarket rotors - I took those available from Lucas) and the speedo drive of the R1150R. You also need to buy the appropriate fasteners from your dealer as this is special grade steel. Don't buy ordinary screws at your local toolshop! The the left disc-rotor fitting on the wheel 3.9 mm need to be milled away. This is because the ABS ring of the old R1100S (cast metal) is thicker than the ABS-ring of the R1150R (metal sheet). Next mount the disc rotors/ABS ring (loctite!) onto the wheel and your front wheel with the speedo drive to your front fork and you're done ... If you have a non-ABS oilhead it is a different story and more difficult ...

Suggest you also get hold of the manual available on http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp

If you have other questions please don't hesitate to ask or send me a PM.

Kind regards

Hi Oliver,

your bike is really beautiful. I like it very much.

I bought my 98 R1100R last year so I am a newbie and that's why I would like to to ask you maybe a stupid question. Where did you buy the back top-case rack? I have backcases only and a topcase would be great to have.
I tried ebay.de a lot of times but I didn't find any top case nor carrier for R1100R. There are always side cases or tankbag only. Here in Slovakia is no good BMW motorcycle dealer so the situation is a bit complicated and most things I buy via ebay.

Thank you!

Hello Martin,

welcome to the club! The rack I have is the original BMW part for the R1100R/R850R models. It was on the bike when I bought it in 1998 brandnew from the showroom. I believe this rack is very much sought after these days and very hard to find. I can only suggest to you to watch out for this on the various ebay platforms (.com, .co.uk, .fr, .de and so on) and maybe try with some of the salvage specialists (such as for example beemerboneyard.com with whom I have made good experience in the past).

Good luck to you and always safe riding!

Kind regards

Hi there,

a lot of you guys have seen my roadster and many of you liked it. However a recent ride on the racetrack brought up some necessary changes. First of all I believe the bike is getting too hot due to the relatively small oil cooler placed under the telelever. Hence I got myself a larger cooler taken off a ducati 1098. Secondly I believe one can never have enough power hence I got myself a pair of 1150 cylinders taken off a R1150GS and a pair of forged pistons. And I am actually looking for some pankl titanium conrods (or forged carillo conrods). This will help to bring the roadster to around 118 HP and 118 NM of torque. Once completed I'll post the results.

Pics from the racetrack below (copyright racepixx.de).

Hi Oliver,

Absolutely the nicest R1100R I've ever seen !
I've never been a fan of the R1100R, but after crashing my 1150 Rockster an old '95 R1100R with 102K km. was the only thing I could afford.
A couple of things I really hate about the R1100R: that stupid lunchbox around the speedo, non-adjustable (way too high, way too back) handlebars and most of all: those kiddy's-bike three-spoke wheels.
I'm now looking for some nice handlebar-adapters (Wuedo or Wunderlich), probably in combination with an original Rockster-handlebar, a small windshield which covers the lunchbox, but what I sure would like to have are those wonderful wheels you've got there.

Hi Erwin,

thanks for your reply. Go ahead man! You can get most of the parts I have used to mod my oilhead thru some of the salvage specialists or e-b.. The only difficult thing to obtain maybe the front fairing as the manufacturer went bust and after re-emerging they stopped making this afaik.

My projects for this winter are a new dashboard, oil-cooler, the front fork coming from the R1100S, 1150 cylinders/forged pistons, new clutch. I already have the parts and this will keep me busy during the dark part of the year.

Enjoy the bike!

Best regards
Oliver

Hello,

Do you still have this R1100R? Your gauges look different. Were they altered?

What do you mean by gauges? The instrument cluster? Same is stock and the update introduced late 1997/early 1998.

However in the meantime some other things were changed. See latest photos:

a) photos dated 27Mar 2011: https://picasaweb.google.com/omg9500/BMW20110327
b) photos dated 06May 2011: https://picasaweb.google.com/omg9500/VentildeckelNeu

Guess what was changed ...
