2004 R1150 run problem - newbie

Post by bean »

I just bought a 2004 R1150R and I've ridden it twice. Today I cranked it and it kept quitting on me.

Symptoms:

Cranks fine, runs ok - will sit and idle, will rev up
roll it backwards and she quits
putting into gear is tricky, it doesn't want to go into 1st but if I click into 2nd and then into first it goes
As I release the cluch to go she quits
I did get it running in gear a bit but it keeps quitting

Any ideas?

Additional information.

When I try to start the bike I hear a buzz/whine, such as a fuel pump maybe, and the bike will crank when I hear it. If that sound is not present it will not even turn over. When it conks out that sound is not there.

Most of the time it is a combination of tunning, idle and TB (throttle bodies) sync or weak/failed stick coils. If this doesn't make any sense check the FAQ's and maintenance forums on the site.

BTW, welcome aboard and good luck, you also need to post some pics of the new ride.

Fuel pump comes on when you turn the key to pressure up the system......if it whines loudly it might be that the filter (in the tank) is plugged.....How many miles does the bike have on?

Is the kick stand up all the way when you have this problem?

Front wire harness too tight?

Is the kill switch centered completely?

Kickstand is up, checked it several times
No idea about the harness
Checked the kill switch several times and flipped it back and forth

The info you gave seems to point in different directions.

So are you saying that sometimes you don't hear the fuel pump prior to hitting the starter? If it just isn't there after the engine dies, that's probably because the lines are already pressurized and it sees no need to pump any more. Normal. If you don't hear that pump run for a second or two prior to starting, then you have an interlock - like the kickstand switch - that's causing a problem.

:-k You'll have to explain this further.

Normal. If you roll forward or backward a few inches, you should be able to get 1st w/o going to 2nd.

Has enough power to idle, but not enough to go. Probably sounds pretty rough at higher revs?

Okay... just to clarify, are easing out the clutch? Or just "letting go" ?
I know I had trouble initially with not easing the clutch lever out slowly enough to get moving. The bike would stall.

Are you new to riding or to BMWs?

I have discovered that the fuel pump stops when I turn the handlebars to the left or right. When I turn the bars when the motor is running it shuts down.

Any clues

Yes. These bikes came from the factory with wire tires that were too tight behind the headlight area. You have got a wire or two that is shorted. I've never had this problem, but quite a few people do. You are going to need to get to the wiring harness that runs from your bars to under the tank and start cutting back the plastic around the harness until you find your bad wire. I'm sure someone will chime in soon with a picture of the harness you're looking for and some more detailed instructions, but you have found your problem. Now the hard part will be "fixing" your problem.

I had this problem a few months ago. The fuel pump was intermittent. Sometimes it worked then it would stop. It reached the stage that whenever I tried to turn left the bike would cut out, not good.
All of the advice about cable ties are spot on. Get yourself an auto electrician like I did and you will most probably find the wire to the fuel pump is nearly broken and can be repaired in 30 minutes.
Cut the cable ties.

You would think that having discussed this on this forum alone for the last 8 or 9 years everyone would already have cut those wire ties by now. Just one of those factory installed items that has caused NUMEROUS issues but BMW continues to ignore.

I found it. I cranked up and stared squeezing the harness untill she cut off. Right behind the fork sleeve. THe sheething is torn and and the ribbon wire has a spot on it.

Thanks!

Boxer....shame on you, I see that you have developed the teacher/pupil syndrome to the max, just because you teach the same subject every year doesn't mean that new students have to be up on the subject matter.
