Gentlemen - thanks for the very insightful info on this.I am now a new and proud owner of a used RR.

I literally took delivery of a 2004 R1150R yesterday (with only 8300 miles on it) and trailered it back through some torrential downpours from Charleston, SC, to Charlotte, NC. When I pulled into a gas station to fill up my car, I went ahead and filled up the tank on the R1150R. Lo and behold, the water picked up by the storms made its way unceremoniously into the gas tank. I was shocked and horrified that my drain plugs were plugged up and the problem goes back as far as the '04s.

As part of my detailed cleaning and servicing I'll be ordering the S1000 part - I'm hoping that the part fits '04 RRs. Thanks for the insightful info - I'll be removing the gas tank as well to check for any mung/rust in the process.

After reading this post, I decided to check the fill cap area on my '07 R1200R. I got the cap off, but the 2 of the 3 seal hold down screws were rusted in place. I could see the blistered paint (primer?) in the bottom of the well, but I couldn't get at it. It took me 2 days of futzing with penetrating oil to finally get the screws out (verrrrrryyyyyy slowly, rocking back and forth). The rust covered about half the well. I plugged the opening with a rag and sanded away most of the nasty stuff. Painted it with a brush and some high-gloss enamel paint. Paint is actually better than picture shows.
Two small holes might be drains. I'll make sure they're open before reassembly.

Thanks to the good info on this BB, including some really fine pictures, I nipped my rust problem in the bud. Second coat of paint is drying, and MAX BMW is shipping me the seal ring from the S1000RR. I guess every model has its problems, but on such a costly component, you'd think the Germans would have done a better job of rustproofing (or waterproofing).


A lot of gunk came out when I ran the tap down the holes. I coated the tap with grease first. The holes are blind, so no crap will fall in the tank, but the grease catches most of the crud. And it may help stop future rusting.

The 2 vent passages are clear, but I don't think they're for water. They seem to be just for fuel overflow. That's why I'm installing the seal ring.

This is what I came up with from the fine collection of stuff that might come in handy type things I have kicking around in the man cave.
The Plug o matic

It did the job well and I could move the top support bar around while cleaning to get to all the affected area.

I removed all the big stuff by hand and then got into it with a poor mans dremil.
Purchased a POR starter kit for $35AU and followed the instructions……..sort of I think I put too thick a first coat and it bubbled a little in the corners, so I just hit it with dremil again and recoated.

The POR stuff is good gear…....sets very hard, even in the chilly confines of a Canberra man cave in winter.

The clamp was easy to remove and an inspection with the torch(that’s a flashlight for Yanks) revealed no debris had made it’s way into the tank.

On the subject of the tank I did drop a screw into the tank while working out how to make my Plug o matic , to my relief the area below the filler hole is pretty flat so it was easy to get with a magnet.

Hope this is understandable

Nice! Welcome to the forum. It's summer here in the northern hemisphere, man caves are for winter

I just ordered my gasket today. Is this still regarded as a necessary fix or have new unforeseen problems surfaced as a result of the fix (like trapped water)?

Have not heard or seen a report of any problems resulting from installing the gasket.

All right gentlemen - tried to install an ABCDeckring from a BMW S1000RR on my 2004 R1150R and am confused. How exactly is this gasket supposed to fit? I"m not sure it's supposed to fit the way I've got it on there because it definitely is not what I call a perfect fit.

It's a perfect fit on the R1200R and a lot of us have used it. Where did you hear it would fit a R1150R, maybe you should check the 1150 list.
